In spite of its sterling reputation in upstate New York, I'm not a big
fan of Lapland Lake. The trails are indeed well maintained, and they're in a good snow zone. But as a casual classic skier, I get put off by the number of skate ski racers at the facility who sometimes have little patience for slower parallel skiers. The place has also long had the feel of an expensive downhill ski resort...with the latest in upscale ski outfits. Simply doesn't mesh with my laid back style with my wool pants, gators and down vest. The trails also lack a real back country feel. And most do not offer sufficient ups and downs for my taste. My favorite cross country resort by far is Garnet Hill. The place could be packed but if you go on the far trails, you are nearly alone. For woodland beauty and challenging trails not far from Lapland, I enjoy Artic Circle. Lapland, if you want me back, cut some more back country trails on challenging terrain! |

The place actually does NOT have a lot of skate skiers - the trails are
too narrow for skating. |

It will be interesting to see how Travis and Ivana will be able to
establish their own style of managing and operating separate from Olavi and Ann, who will continue to live on the property, help out day-to-day (according to the website) and, presumably, are still the owners. Gene Eddie Luban wrote: http://www.laplandlake.com/press_release.htm Eddie |

Agreed Andrey,.....but if the new owners were so inclined as to make the
trail system more skate friendly, it has huge fun potential. I love the layout but the poor skating has (until now?) been a bummer. I would almost guess from looking at their background that the new owners may want skaters as well as kickers. Being 55 minutes from LL, I can only hope! Mike........ wrote in message oups.com... Interesting indeed, Gene. Might make for a great new reality show!

wrote in message oups.com... The place actually does NOT have a lot of skate skiers - the trails are too narrow for skating. The last time I was there (about 4 years ago) I was with a friend who was a novice skier. So we headed for the beginner trails across the road from the ski store, between the road and the lake. Those loops were full of skate ski racers. Even though we were staying in the ski tracks, we were nearly knocked down a couple of times by people skating up from behind. Granted, I shouldn't knock an entire place by the actions of a few arrogant SOB's, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. |

Lapland needs wider trails for good skating and that probably requires moving a lot of trees and boulders. Has Friend's Lake done any improvements lately? Or were they out of control and only your quick evasive maneouvres saved you? Or were they skiing the wrong way on one-way trails? If not, how do you know you were nearly knocked down? And how do you even know these people were "racers"? Whatever that means.... One other thing -- you mentioned earlier you have a laid back style of dress and the "with the latest in upscale ski outfits" doesn't go with that. I know this will sound arrogant (I am, in fact, a rather arrogant person) but I have to say that people with actual laid back attitudes (not just dress) aren't easily bothered by what other people are wearing. I love Garnet Hill too and hope the new management at Lapland Lake can adapt the quality of grooming and truthfulness in advertising that Garnet Hill displays. So isn't it nice to have a choice of more than 1 place to ski? And even moreso to know that the crowd you don't feel comfortable with is at the *other* place? :-) Lapland, if you want me back, cut some more back country trails on challenging terrain! I may be mistaken but I was under the impression that much of the land crossed by the farther reaching trails at LL is not actually owned by LL. Thus cutting new trails might require new permissions to be otained. Maybe Gene has a better about this. In any case, I don't think there's any shortage of back country trails to be found for skiing. The Adirondacks are chock full of them. It's nicely groomed trails that there are a shortage of IMO. -Mitch |
