Steel Scraping- How To Get The Peel?
Recently I've been steel scraping my rock skis. However, I can't get
the solid ribbon, or peel removing the base material. It tends to be stringing and puts a linear structure in the base. I prefer doing them by hand instead of sending the skis off to a stone grinder, so I'm determined to get it right. I've read several descriptions of how first to square and joint the edge of the scraper. Even bought a good burnisher tool and take real care getting any nicks out of the scraper by finishing with a wet stone. The problem isn't getting the hook on the scraper, but getting a uniform peel. Any advice would be appreciated. |

I think it's just a matter perfecting the 'art' of scraping. I had a cabinet
maker friend, who skis very little, show me how to scrape with a metal scraper ..... it was perfect ! A good sharp scraper is necessary but after that I think it's just a matter of getting the 'feel of the peel'. jw milwaukee |

Assuming you are starting with a good tool steel scraper the answer to you
question is probably "practice". First you have to develop the skill the sharpen the scraper to cut the base evenly. Then you have to develop the skill to use the scraper consistently along the length of the base. Scraping and stone grinding are not the same thing. Scraping will flatten you ski across the width, but is not very efficient at removing any waves across the ski base. Stone grinding will flatten the base both across and along the length of the ski and it will cut a structure into the base. If you just scrape you will have to use a rill or other structuring tool to press a structure in the base. Scott wrote in message oups.com... Recently I've been steel scraping my rock skis.
