Default French glaciers - latest

Just heard the following from an instructor at 2 Alpes....

"Conditions are awful here, but better than Tignes, which I hear is
closed. Several other glaciers are closing and we've closed the Lauze
and the Croisiere Blanche now. They keep saying that we'll stay open but
I don't see how we can. The nursery lift is off, the snow is diabolical,
and I'm seriously considering abandoning at the end of the month. I
can't in all conscience sell beginners lessons if they have to walk back
up the slope every time on foot, and it's not very interesting for
decent skiers any more. The lower half (yes - half) of the Puy Salie is
now all moraine ice and the crevasses are opening everywhere. I've
nearly fallen into one twice in the last 2 days!"

So barring a dramatic change in conditions, sounds as if that's it for
this year on the French glaciers, folks.

Latest (today, Saturday) at Deux Alpes:

Froze overnight Thursday so conditions ok up to 1130/1200 on Friday, but
last night was warm and it was already sludgy at 0900. A significant
number of instructors in the resort allegedly feel that it would be
better if it closed, more responsible, and that it would be better
publicity for the resort to act before there are any serious accidents.
However "Deux Alpes Loisirs", (the lift company, with various other
interests, that virtually runs the place) is said to be out of pocket
each summer, and without August they'd be seriously in the red, so like
Tignes it looks as if they'll try to stay open as long as possible.

Tignes will not close before the 15/8 - and they are still hoping for
some snow. The weather is getting cooler and more unsettled.

l'Alpe d'Huez closed on Saturday 26/7/2003. In theory they were going
to open until the end of August (this was the original program). The
summer ski area had been considerably redeveloped last year. The
glacier will now be closed until autumn half term.
