This I disagree with, because there are plenty of rad-dude teenagers on
skis and you _don't_ see them sideslipping down the steep. They know it
makes them look like dorks.

Just strapping on a snowboard, a "dork" is about the best one could hope
for.

Boarder are the ones trying to blend into a skiers world. It's their
problem. My contention is that they are not compatable. People don't play
frisbee on golf courses during play.

Where I am there are as many boarders as skiers. You are going to have to
learn to deal with it.

Additionally, skiiers and boarders turn differently. Watch and learn for
your own safety.

****'em. They have to learn. But I don't ski where toys are allowed

anyway.
I like soft snow.

Good luck. There are fewer places every year where you can avoid them. There
are certainly none in my state. Additudes like yours are probably the
biggest problem in this issue.

The sport has matured quite a bit over the last 20 years or so. I remember
when there were packs--literally packs or 10 to 14 year old boarders on our
mountains who thought they could "shred" and that it was their right to
intimidate and take out any unwitting skiers they should come accross. Now
they are in their 30's and 40's and trying to teach their ofspring both
common sense--and how to ride responsably. It has been an interesting
evolution. I don't talk trash about riders anymore--but I have no patience
for "friends" (especially parents) who sandbag their "friends"(or children)
and get them onto slopes they can't handle--regarless of being skiers or
boarders. That just isn't fair--to say nothing of risking us all.

And "friends" who tell their "friends"--"oh you don't need a lesson--just
come with me." are the worst--regardless of what means of snow
transportation they use.

Do snowboarders ski and do skiers snowboard? Some do both and others
are just to comfy with there skiing or snowboarding, that they don't
try both. I think before you can make assumptions, on snowboarders
ruining the slopes. You should step out of your comfort zone and try
something new. We boarders don't always rag on the skiers, unless they
start with us. I have skied and snowboarded and they both tear up the
slopes, if your willing to do new and exciting tricks! Its not a
question of who does it because we all do it.We all have to share the
space, so live with it and don't complain.

NO! I don't. I haven't skied at an area that allows boards in years. If Alta
goes I move to the beach. Do you suppose those surfers will mind if I kayak
in "their" waves?

There are two here. Both some of the best skiing in the country for their
own reasons.

My attitude has nothing to do with the FACT that a snowboard negatively
effects both traffic patterns and snow quality. Enough so that I choose not
to ski rather than mix.

From what I've heard from my kayaker friends, the surfers are very hard to
deal with.

I really can't imagine why anyone would get so worked up about snowboarders.
I co-existed with them for years before I took up the challenge of riding.
It's certainly your loss if you choose to respond this way.

As I understand it, most resorts would go out of business without the
boarders. They are saving both sports.

It's usenet. People get worked up about some of the most silly-assed
things you could imagine. (Hint: it's not really about the boarders)

Now get out there and teach those nascent boarders how to do it right!

Ha. That WOULD be poetic justice: pigo taking his kayak into the surf.

Snowboarding is one of pigo's hot-buttons. There are plenty of others
who have legit objections to some common snowboard behaviors but aren't
worked up about it, so be careful not to dismiss anyone who _does_
object as being "so worked up".

And their the borders. Hmmmmmm, imagine that.

Too bad for you.

I ski at two that are very popular and highly rated for their own reasons.
They don't allow boards.

Behaviors are something I can deal with on an individual basis. But that
doesn't mean that I can't recognize behaviors that run in packs. But I can
take care of myself, I feel sorrier for the women and children that are
"accidently" run over more often according to my observance.

What I don't like (again) is the traffic pattern and effect on the under
foot snow.

Neither my stepson nor myself have ever been run into by another skier
or boarder. My wife OTOH gets hit by as boarder nearly every time we go
skiing. Usually in a slow skiing area such as the approach to a lift by
someone sliding out of control and way too fast for the area. I would
have to say I generally agree with your observations.

I have not found them ALL to be jerks though (but an inordinate number
seem to be). One boarder, about 10 years old, last year helped my step
son when he bailed on a jump and for some reason ejected both poles. He
stepped out of his board quicker then we could sidestep back uphill and
ran uphill to retrieve them for us. He was actually quite a pleasant
little guy. And IIRC he wasn't side slipping either.
