There is a minus side to the Donek Incline. Some people off of this
forum have noted that it is not very nimble except at high speeds. This
could cost my son dearly as he navigates trees.

As you stated, not all boards are for everyone.

My sons priorities for a board would be:
Freeride trees, jumps and pops (High)
Bombing and carving (Medium)
Park, pipe, rails (Low)

chris,
these are my priorties for a board as well and this year i am buying the
neversummer premier. take a look at boardreviews.com to see what people
riding them have to say.. the boards are made in the u.s. and they offer a
full 3 yr warranty. i just picked up one of the 02/03's for my gf, and have
an 04/05 reserved for myself - should be here anytime!! i have been riding a
ride timeless for 7 yrs and it has treated me well. also a very good board
in the trees and stable at high speeds. the only down fall to the timeless
(my model) is that it doesn't float as well as i would like it to in the
deep pow.

good luck!

Ok, now back to the topic at hand. Forget even thinking about park
boards, you son won't need it starting out (he could still ride the
144 if he wanted to). I agree that tree riding is not the Incline's
strength. Now as other people have mentioned, you could consider
demoing the new Donek Phoenix or Twintip boards. If you are still not
into Donek I think Salomon makes a great board as well - I would
suggest the Amp or Forecast (that's the 450, right Mike?) but not the
Definition or Fastback. Those are my personal suggestions as I like
Donek and Salomon. I don't think the Custom X is going to be a good
board for you son though (too stiff and too expensive for a growing
boy)... maybe the Custom if you HAD to by a Burton board. Ride
Timeless is decent, but just not as good quality or value for your
money as Salomon or Donek in my opinion. Go for a medium length board
(150-152) with a medium flex.

Hello Arvin,

You made a suggestion not to pick up a Solomon Definition. I do not know
much about the board, but can pick one up pretty inexpensively ($270).
What might be the reason? Admittedly, $510 is a bit much for a growing
boys board! But $270 might not be bad.

Thanks,

Chris

The Salomon (with an 'a') Definition (I rode the 2001-2002 model) is
even more of an all-mountain board than the Donek Incline. It is
stiffer, has more edgehold and more stable / less chatter (very damp
and will ride through crud without you even have to think about it).
However, it is also heavier and more unwieldy at low speeds (very
tough to ride in between the trees). I personally really liked it for
high speed bombing down hills... but it was just too heavy, unwieldy
and damp (very little pop in the tail from my experience). in the
trees and on jumps... the Donek incline is a bit more versatile than
that... so if you thought the Incline was "single purpose" than the
Definition (in the form I last saw it) will be even more so.

Hello Brian,

Yes I did. I like the use of E Glass in it's construction. Much like
Donek, they kept it simple.

What is your impression of the AMF in the tree's?

I called Donek, and was quite impressed with the engineering that he put
into the boards. I do not know how the AMF compares and am hoping you
could shed some light on the subject. It looks like it might be a bit
stiffer than the Donek Phoenix, more like the Incline.

Regards,

Chris
