fat_boy writes So, unless the GPS unit ALSO measures altitude, and can add a vertical component to the calculation, it can not work for skiing. They all measure altitude. A minimum of 3 sats is req'd for this to be anything near accurate. They do measure actual velocity. Aircraft use this information. -- Pete Devlin [{//////news03//////at\\\\\secondrow/////co\\\\\uk}] "And don’t forget my dog, fixed and consequent" |

Ho ha, such a cretinous post.
Anyway, toss pot, in a pointless attempt to drag this thread back on topic and away from invective, like yours, I am going to use a windspeed meter to measure my speed. |

fat_boy writes Ho ha, such a cretinous post. In the off chance that you are replying to me (with no quoted context it is impossible to tell) I would wager that my credentials in that area somewhat outweigh yours. In fact it would appear that the primitive instincts of an amoeba more resemble rational thought than your ramblings. Anyway, toss pot, in a pointless attempt to drag this thread back on topic and away from invective, like yours, I am going to use a windspeed meter to measure my speed. Nice one Einstein. The variations in density, static pressure, dynamic pressure and wind velocity and direction will give you a far less accurate reading than a GPS but if it satisfies you - crack on. -- Pete Devlin [{//////news03//////at\\\\\secondrow/////co\\\\\uk}] "And don’t forget my dog, fixed and consequent" |

will only be usefull on a still day, unless you get a reading while still
and then adjust as necessary. The background wind speed would need measuring like you say, and for the most part, it isnt that windy once you are off the peaks and in the trees say. the wind speed meters that I have seen have either a fan blade thing that spins or a set of cups. which one are you going to use? I got hold of a fan type for =A330. In a tuck, and held in the hand, it will be in clean airflow so should give an accurate reading. |

Nice one Einstein. The variations in density, static pressure, dynamic
pressure and wind velocity and direction will give you a far less accurate reading than a GPS but if it satisfies you - crack on. I asked the company if there was any data on adjustment of read speed for altitude based on the density changing, as one would for a wind powered generator. They said it was not relevant, as the loading on the fan is very low, which makes sense. But, since it can be callibrated at sea level and at 1000 meters I will verify their statement. As regards static wind velocity and direction, it can easilly be factored in. So **** for brains, I am way ahead of you. |

They said it was not relevant, as the loading on the fan is very low, which makes sense. To you maybe. They are always going to say that aren't they? But, since it can be callibrated at sea level and at 1000 meters I will verify their statement. And how do you suppose you are going to do that? As regards static wind velocity and direction, it can easilly be factored in. No it can't and it varies around every corner and undulation. So **** for brains, I am way ahead of you. Thank you for choosing this moment to reveal your ****wittery to the world. You can ignore my somewhat specialist advice or you can carry on. I care not. The wind measuring technique is the cheaper "daddy on the welfare" and less accurate technique. GPS is better and laser/doppler better still. I suspect it's all nugatory anyway as you sound like the kind of gadget collecting wanabee who "blasts" around blue runs in a spacker racing snow plough thinking you look good. Then again, I suppose we were all like that once. -- Pete Devlin [{//////news03//////at\\\\\secondrow/////co\\\\\uk}] "And don’t forget my dog, fixed and consequent" |
