Astro, I have criticisms of the French but I dislike what I see as
knee-jerk French bashing. I could never hate a country with that much
culinary expertise. Britain, on the other hand, is a culinary waste
land....

Astro's rhetorical tack is old; it's so obvious, it was identified as an
effective technique by the ancient Greeks:

Argumentum ad populum (appeal to the people): In Classical Rhetoric,
Edward P.J. Corbett gives some examples of the appeal to mass
sentiment. "Honorific terms--Americanism, patriotism, motherhood,
rugged individualism--are used to stir up a favorable emotional
climate; pejorative terms--socialism, godlessness, radical,
reactionary--are used to arouse hostile reactions." This is a
tried-and-true diversionary tactic that takes many forms. "The
sanctity of private property rights" comes to mind.

Of course, the perjorative terms list Mr Corbett gives would have to be
augmented to include Michael Moore and the French.

We'd go to Pizza Hut just to get the salad. I'm not joking. It was that bad.

As if Australia has any claim to food fame.

That is simply not true and shows your bias toward anything good that
comes from other countries.

Australia is world famous for their culinary talent that resulted in
Vegemite.

Or...?? was that infamous?? I get those two mixed up.

Although I suppose the lamb chops are good and cheap, and the Roo is
hopping delicious.

I stopped drinking French Roast. I haven't stopped Frenching though.

You guys think Lance Armstrong will change his mind and try to win an
eighth Tour de Freedom?

From what I've read about him, I don't see how he can quit unless he breaks
something essential. Try quitting smoking. It's probably harder than that.

I understand he lives in Freedom...

The breakfasts is the worst stuff. Quite often we eat in at my bil's
house so there's a Dutch twist to our meals there as well. When we go
out for dinner is usually at their favorite Indian place, that's real
good.

Yes, Indian was the only reliably good eat-out food we encountered.
sometimes it was superb. We'd go mad if we found markets and buy up big on
fruit. Breakfasts weren't too bad, if they had eggs and things, but the
black pudding was a bit much, yugh.

Most of the times we've gone out to dinner it's been good,
meaty stuff. Not particularly imaginative or anything. Meat, gravy,
potatoes, and (something that would make scatty move there) spotted
dick (he'd be disappointed to find out it's a pudding type desert).

Spotted Dick, famous pudding, I think it has sultanas or raisens in it.
steamed pudding is a dying art.
We got some good food in Scotland, good hearty stews. And the pub lunches
were always reliable, with good bread, cheese, pickled things and salad.
Rather a lot of cheese though.

I hope that means they drop the price of the French blend/roast beans at the
supermarket when I get there. I was quite partial to that.

we can't claim Vegemite, as we stole it off the Poms, where it's called
Marmite, and put it in our special jars.

Personally, IMO, Italy has better food, better wine, and the people
are much more polite. And it's less expensive too.

The same could be said with respect to the U.S.

I'm buying a lot less French wine these days. Only because the
cut-and-run Spaniards are kicking their tails on the price/quality
scale, though.
But I still got some drop-dead delicious Gigondas in the cellar.
