Default Should women ski the same distances as men?

Why is it that women do not ski the same distances as men in olympic
x-c events? Women are more than capable and prepared to ski the 50km
freestyle event and all other distances for that matter. In the summer
olympics women run the same distance for the marathon, swim equal
distances, complete the same distance for the triathlon and correct me
if I am wrong but I believe they also complete equal distances in all
track and field events as men.

Hockey, figure-skating, curling, etc. Just about everything else is the
same. XC should be too.

Yes they should.

Perhaps a new form of biathlon... give the men perhaps a 3 or 4 minute
start. Assemble a group of ex-wives of said men, or women they've
cheated on previously, give _them_ the rifles. See who skis faster... ? =)

Cheers,
Chris

On the other hand, in the World Cup events they are forced to race before the men, in that cold and icy
time before the sun breaks thru, so they dont get to experience the same track conditions as the men.

But in the big city running marathons the elite women get to start 30 mins before the men and their leaders get to finish before the men, but the leading men have to contend with most of the slower elite women runners and runners dont have the 'convention' of someone behind calling Track.
