I hate to be overly critical, but the US really has no depth (skipping the
nations event), and has never I believe produced a technical skier. We
churn out speed addicts on a fairly regular schedule, but can anyone correct
me here?

Mahre? McKinney? Even Bode started skiing WC as a technical skier
(slalom specialist.)

Why did the FIS cancel the last downhill at Bormio then? They seemed to run
the SG and GS OK...

Shame that such an important race isn't rescheduled, even at another venue
if necessary.. kind of devalues the efforts of the competitors.

There have been some pretty horrific crashes (in DH and SG) this year
and safety became a huge issue. *I think that they were smart in not
runing a DH under questionable conditions. *They did run a DH in soft
conditions in Aspen this year (women) and some girls paid the price.

The conditions were better for the SG and in GS, the risk is lower
because the speeds are lower. *If you asked Bode and the other racers,
I think he would say they did the right thing. *

Actually, Miller was reported to have been critical of the decision
not to run the downhill. He claimed that they didn't really want to
run it because they were biased in favor of the Swiss and Austrians.

No problem with Didier Cuche winning, but I kind of agree with Miller, they
didn't seem to make much effort to reschedule, even on a shortened course or
by shuffling the other events around.

Considering Men's DH is the blue riband event in most people's eyes the FIS
doesn't come well out of this.
