Trying to decide St. Anton, Lech, Stuben - Austria
Related question: Stuben looks nice, how is the ski slope access
from there ? Stuben has a ski area above it that's known for it's powder skiing. When you want to get to St.Anton you first have to take the Albona I (slow 2p chair). Then you can ski down to 'Alpe Rauz' where you can take the 'Valfagehr' (slow 3p chair). Up there you're in the main ski area of St.Anton with a simple run all the way back to St.Anton. In the afternoon you can ski back to Stuben without taking lifts from Valluga, Schindler and Galzig. Advantage of Stuben is that there are almost no queues in the morning and that you can take the free bus from 'Alpe Rauz' to Zurs/Lech. It takes longer to get to 'Alpe Rauz' from St. Anton. I'd choose Stuben 'cause it's a nice little village with good powder skiing above it. However, if you have the money, Lech is a great option as well. There will be some new fast chair lifts which should take away some of the queues. I didn't like St.Anton for the queues up to Galzig or Gampen. However, if you live in another village you will probably never explore the Rendl area, which is also nice. - Last questions: Train versus Arlberg Express bus from Zurich ? Which is a nicer view/ride ? They both take the same route I guess. I would take the train from Zurich to Langen am Arlberg, which is a stop for intn'l trains. From there you can take a taxi or bus to Lech. A bus from Zurich would also pass Langen. You can take a look at my map: http://melba.student.utwente.nl/step...lberg_topo.jpg Only the main lifts are shown. The links for the original trail maps are on the map. -Stephan |

Trying to decide St. Anton, Lech, Stuben - Austria
Go to France...
"Cedric Marvin" wrote in message om... Thanks to all who posted to the recent threads about St. Anton, Lech, etc. We (me and girlfriend) are planning our first ski trip to Europe for late January to the Arlberg and we are trying to choose between St. Anton, Lech, and Stuben. What would you choose ? - We are early to bed / sleep all night / ski from lift opening to closing people. I have read here and there that St. Anton can be really a noisy party town - things like being woken up by drunks outside yelling out on the street at 3 AM. Is this really the case ? How much a factor is this in choosing Lech over St. Anton ? - My girlfriend is a "middle" intermediate (I ski everything), I have heard that Lech has more intermediate terrain close in, but at St. Anton you can download from the easier upper slopes if your choose at the end of the day. Any opinions on this ? Is Lech worth the additional money over St. Anton (remember, we don't care much about nightlife). Related question: Stuben looks nice, how is the ski slope access from there ? - Last questions: Train versus Arlberg Express bus from Zurich ? Which is a nicer view/ride ? If my destination is Lech how do I get there from the train station. I have heard that in snowy weather the roads may be closed, but the train may be running - is this a concern ? Arlberg Express has an easy web site. RailEurope seems to be the best place for US people to buy the train tickets - any opinions here ? Thanks in advance for any advice and opinions ? Cedric |

Is this really the case ? It all depends on your exact location. I've stayed in St Anton but outside the main town so this wasn't an issue. However Lech is a much prettier place IMHO, and with less queues in the morning. regards, greg |

I skied St Anton about 17 years ago and the queues were horrnendous in the morning. Are they really still that bad? , as I was think of returning this season, but not if I have to go through that again! Regards Neil. |

That's not high-season so the queues were acceptable, but the Gampen quad (which we took most of the time) still had a 5-10min. queue. If they would replace the Galzig tram it would take the pressure away from the Gampen quad an of course you can get to Galzig without waiting. -Stephan |

Trying to decide St. Anton, Lech, Stuben - Austria
I am going to Lech for two weeks this year (one in January / one in March),
having been every year for about 10 year (preceeded by 2 years in Stuben). I therefore might be biased! Stuben is very quiet, which might appeal, but the runs back to the resort are limited and (relatively) dull (IMHO). St Anton always strikes me as ugly/busy/noisy - more like a town at home. Again down the to the town isn't that great, and it can be a bit bare at times. Lech is beautiful (Oberlech more so - no cars), and the skiing is fantastic. My parents/wife ski on piste and it covers the whole range of intermediates. Well groomed, and I have never queued more than 4/5 minutes for a lift, and that length would be unusual. I ski mostly off-piste and never cease to be amazed by the variety (I have a guide). Most of the visitors to lech are not looking for off-piste therefore untracked snow can be found for weeks after a fall. Lech has several "ice bars" in the main street which can be very noisy after skiing. I stay at the Haldenhof which is about 3 minutes from the main street - a beautiful hotel run by lovely people - most of the serving staff return year after year. They always arrange my transfers/ski lessons/ski pass etc. The pass into the Lech valley (flexenpass) is sometimes blocked by snow. Never happened to me. I think it was blocked for three days last year. I can't remember the name of the pass into St Anton (goes through St Christoph) - but this too can be blocked. I usually catch the Arlberg Express - comes into the centre of Lech (next to the cable car to Oberlech) and the hotel will usually come and collect you from the bus in a car. If they know what flight you are coming in on and it is slightly delayed they will wait... Drop me a note if you want any more info. Cheers "Cedric Marvin" wrote in message om... Trying to decide St. Anton, Lech, Stuben - Austria
We (me and girlfriend) are planning our first ski trip to Europe for
late January to the Arlberg and we are trying to choose between St. Anton, Lech, and Stuben. What would you choose ? None of these, they are considered as expensive and not for people who just sleep at night. Try the Pitztal (glacier, ski bus, train station at Imst), Katschberghöhe (no glacier, ski runs begin right at the hotels, train station at Radstadt) or the Zillertal (glacier, lots of ski runs, ski bus). You seem to be interested in trains, so perhaps the narrow-gauge trains through the Zillertal might be worth a recommendation. Best regards Turan |
