IMO, on the world cup level they make for terribly boring spectating,
especially for the longer distances. You get to see a huge pack ski
most of the race together and then sprint it out at the end. Granted
there can be some exciting moments, but I really preferred interval
starts in which the racers had to ski hard and intelligently right
from the start. When it was close at the end they didn't futz around;
they just skied as hard as they could to the finish. Funny, they made
more races mass starts to attract more fans; I wonder if it's working
out.

During the recent FIS conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia there was a
certain amount of discussion about this hot subject. Hitherto the
complaints have come mainly from representatives from Scandinavian
countries and they have met a united opposition from other European
countries, but now the situation has begun to change and voices for a
return to more individual starts were heard. There will be no changes
within the next couple of years but there will be more discussion at
the next FIS meeting in Zurich.

FWIW some decisions were actually made: there will be no B-finals in
sprint events, the Tour de Ski program will be slightly different and
it will no longer be necessary to finish the Tour in order to get
World Cup points, and starting from 2012 there will be a new TdS-type
World Championship event especially for XC skiing held every fourth
year, i.e. during the gap year.
