Outage

I'd like to apologise to the e-mail list for the absence of service this
last week. Those of you who read this through Netnews may not have
noticed any problems, but those who receive it through e-mail have been
cut-off from discussions.

Our server (piper.hamline.edu) was broken into by a hacker last week, and
much damage was done. Things may be back to more or less normal now (I
can't really tell from here). I expect that most of the notes sent to the
list through e-mail have evaporated into cyberspace. When I went back
into my account, I had no messages, after about a week off line.

I'm not sure what more can be done to avoid such attacks in the future,
but I'm most concerned about not being able to notify all of you e-mail
list members about the problem. I'll be discussing this with the gurus
when I return to campus next month, but suggestions in the meantime would
be welcome.
