ski areas that are close proximity to the airport?
I want to ski in Europe and I noticed on the Zermatt Switzerland website that it is a 5 hour train ride from Zurich. I hear it's a scenic train ride but 5 hours seems a bit too much. It looks like Geneva is a little closer to Zurich but there are no convenient direct non-stop flights from USA to Geneva. In the USA, I've been a little spoiled by the 45 minute drive from Salt Lake City airport to the slopes. And just about every ski area in North America is less than 2 hours from the airport. In Europe, are there any major ski areas relatively close to a major airport? Austria resorts? France? |

Sion airport is right next to Zermatt but I guess there are no US flights either. Zurich is closer to some other resorts such as Engleberg and Davos. You may find there are flights to Lyon, which is close-ish to some French resorts, although unlike Swizterland you will probably need to hire a car. |

The majority of ski areas in Austria are within 2 hours drive of an airport - some considerably less (Kühtai, Axams, Neustift and glacier, and others over in Salzburg area). Major "name" resorts tend to be about the 90 minute mark (Kitzbühel, Mayrhofen, St Anton/Lech, Ischgl, Obergurgl, SkiWelt resorts) but of course, that depends on your method of transport and road and traffic conditions. Many North Americans go for Innsbruck for the short transfer to hotel (if you arrive into Innsbruck Airport), the nearby (small but historic) resorts and the inclusion of St Anton and/or Kitzbühel on certain varieties of local lift pass (both about 90 minutes to 2 hours from the city). -- Steve http://www.skiseefeld.com/ |

Same sort of thing if you fly into Zurich - lots of resorts within 2 hours
*but* most US flights arrive in the morning so why not let the train take the strain - it is really excellent in Switzerland - and arrive at your resort really refreshed? The train: no problems in driving when the roads are full up with over-stressed Teutonic business executives thundering along at 90 mph in monster 4x4 or trying to get to your resort when the roads are full with snow and ice and you don't know exactly where you are going. I'm thinking of Klosters / Davos and then within 4 hours is the Engadin which is spectacular. You can also get to the Berner Oberland but I'm not familiar with it - I'll let others comment. There are special cheaper tickets for tourists, the buses connect with the trains, all-in-all a very civilised country. -- Simon Brown, Postfach 159, CH-7031 Laax www.hb9drv.ch "Steve" wrote in message news:3f9d29bd$0$21600 The majority of ski areas in Austria are within 2 hours drive of an airport - some considerably less (Kühtai, Axams, Neustift and glacier, and others over in Salzburg area). Which I can recommend as the best resort for a first-time US tourist in Switzerland although it's changed a bit since I was there last. If you only get one week in Switzerland ever go to Zermatt. Now we can get well off-topic and suggest a week in the Engadin (St. Moritz for example) then the trans-glacier express to Zermatt for a week then back home to put in the overtime to pay off the overdraft :-) -- Simon Brown, Postfach 159, CH-7031 Laax www.hb9drv.ch |

In Europe, are there any major ski areas relatively close to a major
airport? Austria resorts? France? How about Chamonix? A mere 45 minutes up the motorway from Geneva and offering a very large and extensive skiing area. Failing that you could drive for 21/2 hours up to The Three Valleys (Meribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens/Les Menuires) a further hour up to Val D'Isere or you could go the other direction to the Portes de Soleil - Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets are all within 2 hours of Geneva. Verbier is also only a couple of hours max from Geneva. The choice is there - all it needs now is a decision! I am not really familiar with Austria however. HTH Tom |
