I think the article is hilarious and she's obviously taking the **** out of
herself more than her pupils. There is definitely a difference between US
responses to satire and that of other English speaking countries.

It does remind me of when I was an absolute beginner skier about 10 yrs ago
in Thredbo Australia. On the bunny slopes a young girl (about 12) kept
balling her eyes out each time she fell (like me at the time, this was quite
a frequent occurrence). Her instructor (a 6' Austrian Amazonian by the name
of Helga) finally whacked [1] the girl over her head with her ski. I agree
that this is perhaps not the best teaching technique but in the US Helga/the
ski company would have been slapped with a multi-million $ lawsuit. Helga
was back teaching at Thredbo the next year. She also waited tables at our
hotel and I can tell you no-one ever argued with her if she got the order
wrong.

[1] it was a very soft whack

FWIW, I thought the article was hilarious! As to her getting fired,
I'm not at all surprised... big American ski resort companies view a
good chunk of their employees as... disposable.

Although I agree with the disposable part, I don't think that was
the reason in this case. She's in a service industry projecting an image
that students are laughed at behind the scenes. No service industry
want to project an image that their customers are being laughed at,
having no respect whatsoever - hence the firing.
