In that case you could try greater footbed angle, heel lifts, or stiffer
boots, all of which would relieve stretched ankle/calve parts...

yes, my normal orthotics have a very built up heel. And I think I want
stiffer boots, for that reason and others. The X-Waves were so bloody soft,
they were ridiculous. I'm sure my achilles over-extended a number of times.

What sort of ankle/achilles problems are you having? I just got the
X-wave
9s. I haven't had any ankle problems in the two days I've skied on them,
though my calf is getting awfully sore. They're a more aggressive boot
than
my old ones.

I'm honestly not sure what caused it, I was conscious of "something"
happening on both tendons, and a general stiffening, and pain, but it was
worse in other parts of the foot. I have ended up with biggish lumps on both
achilles tendons, I can't walk far now, and in the morning when I get out of
bed walking is done in a bit of a crouch until they sort themselves out.
this was all much worse after 3 back-to-back seasons in them. I think the
damage is permanent, alleviated by my orthotics but suspect only an
operation will get them back to normal.
these were the first x-wave 9s, in opaque grey. The new see through ones
might be OK. I heard one of my bootfitters mutter about something in the
boots that irritated the achilles, but they sold Salomon and he didn't
elaborate.

day with these boots. I seem to always have problems with numbness in the
one toe; I wonder if I somehow damaged it in the past so that it's more
sensitive than others. It feels "weird" for days after skiing.

That sounds like nerve pain. A proper bootfitter will know what's causing
it. can be a nerve being pressed around the ankle, from the side, or from
underneath the foot ball.

I had a metatarsal pad in my old boots; I don't recall if it helped the
numbness or not, as I had so many problems that they all kind of blurred. The
intention of the pad was to fix this numbness.

I'm going to hold out a few more days without adjustments, just to see if my
boots will continue to improve. If they stop improving and I'm still having
problems, I'll get some fitting work done.

It does seem weird that I have this problem exclusively on my left foot; my
right has no such trouble.

Could it be related to women stuffing their feet in high heels (even women's
flats seem to have more heel than men's) and thereby shortening their calve
and achilles?

My mom's generation was probably the last one to wear nothing but 3"
heels, most often with more or less pointy toes. It was difficult for
her to walk barefoot or in flat shoes, and it took her a long time to
learn to wear lower heels comfortably. Seeing her example, and having
duck feet, I wore 2" heels only when I couldn't get out of it or needed
to intimidate someone and took them off as soon as nobody was looking.
I doubt it's a problem with athletic women my daughter's age (=40)
unless they're sex workers.

Mine are actually black, not grey *or* see-through.

I think the black ones were a softer flex than the 9s. The current 9s are
see through grey, with orange liners, which you can see through the plastic.

Also, I have custom
liners rather than the stock ones, so that may also affect the situation.

yes, I had the Sidas Comformable foamed liners in mine, after they couldn't
get them to fit, Surefoot gave me those.

Argh! I got mixed up. You're right; I have the 8s, which are softer, but
plenty stiff for me. You clearly have far different requirements from your
boots than I do from mine =)

After some time in them, what do you think?

the liners did not make the boots magically fit, and they packed out quite
speedily. If a boot is just the wrong shape and fit, I don't think foams
will work miracles.
My current boots, some atomic B9s, fit so much better because the shell is
the right shape. they heated up teh liners but I think that's more of a
gimick, and finally they put a bit of foam in bits around the ankle and
heel, just to snug things up better.
