backpack advice?

i ski in so cal. Just stuff it in your swim trunks ... Since you're not carrying skis, shovel, etc, and aren't venturing into "die if your equipment fails" territory, things are alot easier. I'd just get an el-cheapo knapsack of the appropriate size, focusing on restraining movement while skiing, which can be distracting. So you need well proportioned shoulder straps, an accross the chest adjustable strap, and a hip strap; everything else is superfluous except size and enough quality your camera won't fall out. Buy by minimizing dollars, otherwise BTW your camera is worthless when it's in a backback. Have you thought this through as to how you will use the camera? Pro ski-photogs I've chatted with usually have their camera right up front and ready to shot all the time. Amateurs are a little more hit and miss, with the emphasis on missing the spontaneous shot. |

Have you thought about a good-sized lumbar pack? No shoulder straps to restrict your movement, lower CoG (not like it makes a huge difference). Mountainsmith makes a few good (but pricey) ones, or if you have an EMS (in Cali? I wonder...), they usually have some less expensive ones. I've found a small backpack properly strapped on is easier to ski with than the equivalent size butt-bag. The butt-bag bounces. |

I use a 44L Ice Pack because of the stabilization. What keeps a load from shifting while climbing does the same skiing. I have more weight, tripod, etc... -- According to John Perry Barlow, "Jeff Davis is a truly gifted trouble-maker." |

Camera is velcro attached to pad when not in use (neck strap for security) and a waterproof flap from top of pad covers camera. Camera available for instant use, not in way when skiing... |
