Removing the footbed in new boots
As long as your feet don't hurt, is there any reason to not take the
footbeds out of a new boot to make it a little roomer, and then, if needed, put them back in after it packs out? |

As long as your feet don't hurt, is there any reason to not take the
footbeds out of a new boot to make it a little roomer, and then, if needed, put them back in after it packs out? Which direction are you looking to gain room in - front to back, side to side, or top to bottom? A decent footbed will generally give you more room front to back - specifically, in your toes - since it keeps your arch from flattening. You'd have a little less room top to bottom. Side to side is generally not impacted. Some boots actually come with decent footbeds, others plain suck. My wife has some 02/03 Salomons that have a decent footbed, my 01/02 Salomons have a worthless one. I use the same custom footbed that I had made for my hardboots in my Salomon soft boots. In general I would only expect removing a footbed to be helpful if it just takes up space and has no arch support, and you need the up-down space. Or if the arch support is totally in the wrong place. If it has "good" arch support, you can probably get the up-down room you need by loosening the laces towards the bottom, maybe doing an extra cross on the laces at the ankle so you can still tighten them higher up. |

@trnddc02: Which direction are you looking to gain room in - front to back, side to side, or top to bottom? Funny as I was about to hit you up for footbed advice. What have you been replacing yours with? Just something off the shelf (could Mike be gelling with....? nah) or custom or? tia |

Funny as I was about to hit you up for footbed advice. What
have you been replacing yours with? Just something off the shelf (could Mike be gelling with....? nah) or custom or? I am using Superfeet Kork, which is one of their custom ones. I had it molded at a ski shop. If I recall I paid about $135 for the footbeds plus the molding. I am actually a little disappointed in them; the cork gets waterlogged and softened out over ~120 riding days and they get slightly warped when I move them between my soft boots and hard. Now they perform the same as a garden-variety $30 Superfeet, which would be fine if my arches weren't a little flat and really far forward on my feet. I am thinking of springing for the wooden-soled ones that supposedly never wear out for next season... Probably overkill but I like happy feet Mike T |
