It's an "air-sled". It has a bottom a bit like that of an inflateable boat, it does get blown up with air, and it has little rails on the sides that enable you to "steer" (at least as well as a snowboard anyway). I think it was about 8" tall and 3' long. Please, Please, Please..................I hope that these soon become acceptable in 1/2 pipes and all snowplay areas that allow snowboards. Ride the earth...right? Or do you think that snowboarders would have some reason not to allow them at "their" areas? Discuss? Snowboarders may or may not care, but I doubt they would get much of a say. It will come down to resort management who will ask two questions. 1) Is there a demand? 2) How much additional liability? I suspect getting them up the lift might be a factor as well, although that may be a subset of 2. From the description they sound more like a toboggan than skis and given that tobogganing is prhibited at most resorts now, I would not expect to see any great changes soon. They're as much like skiing as snowboarding is. You can steer them. They were air filled and appeared to be easily carried on a lift. Is this the device? http://www.airboard.com/flash.htm (warning - much flashiness. You thought K2 and Dynastar had vile websites?) Looks like it might be fun, but I think the novelty would wear off quickly. I could be wrong. |

How many more of our mountain playgounds would have gone belly up? I ski but have at least tried boarding. In fact, I'll probably take a few more lessons before I decide if I really like it or not. Of course, I'll never give up playing on two boards. I enjoy PSIA events too much for that. Given a choice between boarders and all the current ski areas, and no boarders with some smaller number of ski areas, I'll take the boarders. Lisa All at once or three at a time. You make SA seem erudite by comparison. Well since your a doped out boarder. let me explain what RSA stands for. that's Rec. *SKIING* Alpine only thing worse then SA is a boarder. That looks like the one. Looks like it might be fun, but I think the novelty would wear off quickly. That's what we're hoping about snowboards too. But I fear the lowest common denominator society will trend more towards devices like snowboards and airsleds to sell to the uncoordinated, uncommited, lazy and image conciense. I could be wrong. At least you're consistant. When park west was one of the only board infested areas a friend of mine went up and stood in the ticket window with a snow saucer with some old work boots screwed to it for a picture. It looks like that's about to come true. I think it's going to be EXTREMELY funny to hear them argue against it. |

They'd probably be doing better. Boarders scare of the real skiers. They don't spend as much for rentals or lessons. They don't spend as much on food. And most are too young to patronize the bars. Not true. Skier visits by skiers in the ski resort biz has been flat for the past decade or so. The only real growth has been in snowboarders. Look to see ski resorts start to call themselves "winter resorts" down the road. If you need evidence, just look to the $ and marketing efforts that are put into halfpipes and parks. The other part of the picture is the influence skiboarders have on others for their purchase decisions. Skiboarders are oft refered to as the "magnet market" and their influence extends to other members of the family, their peers, the wannabees and the next generation behind them that are mimicing their behavior. I believe the pendulumn to be swinging in the other direction as far as "scary" behavior. The boarders I slide and associate with are great. With all the tackle and paint hanging off some of their bodies, I can see where the faint-hearted could be intimidated, but then, it sound like snowblades intimidate, too, so screw that. Lighten up and be glad they are keeping the industry alive. And sharing the technology. Without skiboards, we would most likely not have fatty skis with shape. RAC You didn't debate my points. Boarders spend less money, and scare away the real skiers. My T-shirt says, "This shirt is the ultimate power in the universe." |

"Harry Weiner" wrote I say we just dig a pit at the end of the 1/2 pipe and let the boarders fall in. When it fills up, cover them over and dig a new one just below. The concept is like that of a roach motel. Boarders go in but they can't get out. It cleanses the entire mountain quite nicely. Discuss? You should get the Nobel Prize for this invention. Right on! All of the skiers who'll try to approach the end of the pipe with their shovels will quickly get squashed by rad dudes flying out, and it will cleanse the entire mountain for us freeride snowboarders. |

If a few of those things will get in the way for the majority of half-pipe users (both skiers and boarders), they'll get banned before you can say that word. |

Boarders weren't banned because they get in the way. |
