Alpine lost skier
Actually a boarder, missing overnight.
There's only three feet from this current storm (practically a drought) but she didn't meet her friends at the end of the day. I hope she didn't have a tree-well accident, the bane of boarders. I wonder if it's possible to design release bindings for boards, maybe with a cable coming up to a handle at your waist that your could pull if upended and smothering in a tree well. The dam Recco people should sell their reflectors to civilians; I called last year and they won't; more money in selling to clothes manufacturers. |

The dam Recco people should sell their reflectors to civilians; I called last year and they won't; more money in selling to clothes manufacturers. Back in the day... When we had discussions over beer (what else?) regarding what ski equipment should be, we wondered out loud about a release system that could be triggered by the user in a panic or trapped situation. One thing we came up with was something like explosive bolts a la missile separation technology, with the trigger built into the handle of the ski poles. This was the days before strapless poles were in vogue. If we were to adapt this to snowboarding, we would need to find another place for the trigger. We had other brilliant ideas back then... I remember someone coming up with the installation of a shotgun shell in the middle of the steering wheel column in a car, designed to fire when said car was in a head-on. We guaranteed that following an uptick in traffic fatalities, the accident rate would plummet radically. Sure beats those expensive air bags they have now. |
