1. How many miles/kilometres (or hours) did you ski/run/rollerski/mtn bike this year? 320 hours 2. What were your highest and lowest mileage(hour) weeks? Highest was 13....then I slept for the next week 3. What was your longest run/ski/mtnbike ? 50K North American Vasa Ski Race 4. How many (if at all) races did you enter? I did 7 ski races 5. What were your best and worst performances ? My best performance was probably the day I beat both of the Jays (Tegeder and Wenner....Sly D. Skeez.) My worst performance was the day the Frontrunner and Birkebeiner Pete ganged up to beat me......(in golf) Best ski race was City of Lakes Loppet....changing from the Birkie to the Kortaloppet the morning of the race and then falling 5 times and bonking had to be my worst, I was 20 minutes behind people that I often ski with. 6. Do you have a favorite, memorable ski/run that you did this year? I'm not as fond of the Birkie trail as others because the hills keep growing year after year. End of the season skiing in Elk River, MN was exceptional last March 7. What was the craziest weather you endured while working out? Hail storm biking back from Rice Lake, WI to my cabin, no shelter anywhere so I had to ride right thru. The noise from the hail hitting my helmet was memorable as were the bruises on my back 8. What were your goals for 2003? Did you achieve them? Each year I hope to hit 360 hours exercising (an hour a day)...I was about 10% short in 2003 9. What are your goals for 2004? 360 hours and to be fit enough to enjoy ski racing 10. Do you have a favorite ski event that you enjoyed watching or competing in? Mora Vasaloppet, Seeley Hills Classic, City Of Lakes Loppet to participate in. The Birkie is a great event but my performace over the years has been so uneven it is always a crap shoot for me on the hills to Hayward John O'Connell 4th Wave skier but 1st wave consumer....used to be elite but, well I'm a bit older now. |

Do you have a favorite ski event that you enjoyed watching or competing in? 3. This is interesting. I did 4 ski races last season. Wow, that's low. The Pepsi, City of Lakes, Mora and the Birkie. The best ski race was Mora (2nd in the 35), but I also skied the Pepsi (9th) and Birkie (41st) well, particularly with the Pepsi being the first race of the year. The City of Lakes was one to forget, but the worst race was my token mt bike race, the Chequamegon. The day started with eating Ammonium D and packing toilet paper. I broke a chain twice and ran the bike a few miles to the finish. 6. A memorable workout. Hmmm, how about a 25 mile hike over two passes in Glacier National Park. I thought I broke a toe, ended up drinking water from a stream, which lead to my Ammonium D Chequamegon. 8. I'm not much of a goal setter. I wanted to win the 35 k Mora, and came close. I wanted to beat Krenz in the Birkie, and he got me by at least a minute, maybe two. 9. I guess my goals this year are about the same as last year. I'd like to really improve my classic result at Seeley in a couple weeks. Usually I'm about 15th or so and I'd like to break into the top 10 depending on who shows. I think I can do it so long as I stand up and stay on my feet. Jay Wenner |

Greetings, rec.skiing. nordic Please feel free to join this thread and submit any information you have compiled regarding your year. You don't have to answer all the question - feel free to add any other info you'd like. Have a great, injury-free new year, everyone!!! snip 1. How many miles/kilometres (or hours) did you ski/run/rollerski/mtn bike this year? Total hours: 165. Skiing 68, running 10, roller ski 25, biking 40, gym 22. Not much LSD training. 2. What were your highest and lowest mileage (hour) weeks? Max about 12 hours, min Zero several times. 3. What was your longest run/ski/mtnbike ? longest ski 51k. 4. How many (if at all) races did you enter? All on snow, two marathons, six 5ks, two 10ks. 5. What were your best and worst race performances? First timer Birkie from the 4th wave moved up to the 2nd wave for this year. Second best was a full length 50k in 2:45. Worst: a 10k at -5F in early January which I just felt awful from the start. 6. Do you have a favorite, memorable ski/run that you did this year? Many including the two marathons mentioned above. 7. What was the craziest weather you endured while working out? The Great Glen to Bretton Woods Event in the untimed catagory with the wife, due to tough waxing conditions and different skiing abilities. At least I did not use my waxless RCS Fischers, since the wife did not have her waxless skis. Glad I insisted that we bail at the 25k point. 8. What were your goals for 2003? Did you achieve them? A decent result at the Birkie. Yes. 9. What are your goals for 2004? Sneak into the Birkie 1st wave, but this is going to be tough due to the lack of training the last few years. Major goal, increase my training hours for 2004 and enter dryland races such as cycling time trials and etc. Increase my core strength. 10. Do you have a favorite ski event that you enjoyed watching or competing in? The Birkie. John |

1. How many miles/kilometres (or hours) did you ski/run/rollerski/mtn
bike this year? Total hours: about 575-600 Not sure on the splits as I raced the Xterra triathlon series this summer and did a lot of swim/bike/run stuff and less rollerskiing this fall. More bounding and pole running though. I averaged 5-7 days per week on snow last winter too. 2. What were your highest and lowest mileage (hour) weeks? 22 was the high and about 8 was the low. Averaged 11-15 hours per week. 3. What was your longest run/ski/mtnbike ? Did a 4 hour brick 3 hrs on the mtb then a 1 hour run. 4. How many (if at all) races did you enter? A lot! Approx 6 Xterra's plus lots of ski races the winter of 2002/2003, through in a cyclocross race and a bundle of running races. 5. What were your best and worst race performances? Best, a couple of good Xterra races...not the National Champs of course. Worst: DNF'd a 10K skate race last winter for no particular reason. 6. Do you have a favorite, memorable ski/run that you did this year? Xterra Tahoe was pretty rad. Even though I suffered like mad at altitude. 7. What was the craziest weather you endured while working out? Great Glen to Bretton woods was pretty nutty. 8. What were your goals for 2003? Did you achieve them? No specific goals, I need to increase my skiing speed, the East has some VERY deep talent here. 9. What are your goals for 2004? Top 3 in age group at Xterra Nationals, and beat Bradlee once!!!!! Plus I may do the Birkie. 10. Do you have a favorite ski event that you enjoyed watching or competing in? Craftsbury Marathon |
