Cut a cable with a pocketknife? Seems like a risky proposition. Glad I
wasn't on that tram...

I have ridden two trams in my life. One at Squaw, one at Garmisch. The
scenery and terrain under both were incredible. But the thought of
plummeting to my death on said terrain is quite disturbing...

Well now; in 1978 one of the cables at Squaw untracked and tore through
a tram car, killing passengers without even requiring that they plummet
to their death, although IIRC one did pop out of the ripped open car for
some air time. http://www.notram.org/squaw1.htm

Have you been on the one at Chamonix (sp)? I was the first one on for
the trip back down. It was spooky.

I was working at a nearby ski area at the time. That was scary. They did
plummet to a certain extent but the "saftey" cable cut through the car
and crushed people on the rebound as far as I understood it.
