I suggest Wilmot Mountain formerly Wilmot Ski Hills.

Did it suddenly get bigger.

Warren Miller mentions this in one of his *old* movies
(SnowWonder, or Ski Film Festival) how they repaint the
altitude on their sign a little higher each year.
So, the growth wasn't sudden, more incremental, as Warren
Miller reports.

Is that the place where patrons are requested to bring stones from home
for deposit on the summit?

How quickly they forget.
I made that up, for Snoqualmie Summit. Back in the days where rsa was a
place where people could have a good laugh, and post without fear of being
defamed and harassed by psychopaths like Bev Ashley.

OK, I did some digging, and the movie is SnowWonder, Warren says:

"Wilmot WI used to be only 126 feet high, today, it is almost 300
feet. Thats because they have a guy on the payroll that paints the
altitude signs
a little higher every year. By 1995 it will have the same
vertical rise as Vail, and the same mob of great skiers...."

The movie is from ca. 1981, near the begining.

In my Lost Ski Area data base it says that the name changed in 1965 when Wilmot
managed to bulldoze up another 20 feet of elevation. Not sure where I got that
quote.

Damn it TCS, thanks for giving me a reason to reply. As I have already
replied,
but would like to reply to this post:

TCS (The Colorado Skier)
Loveland opens in one month!

Yea, Loveland opens in a month. Either the 16th or 18 depending on the
source
ya wanna believe. A-Basin is in the race, and I think it is going to be
close. In the event of a tie, it will be Loveland for me. I don't care
who wins. I have some new twigs to try.

Uh, I think Warren's been at it for about 50 years now, so I don't think
that 1981 neccesarily qualifies as "very old".

What's more, I think I've seen that one myself. Isn't that the one
where he has these corny puns like "It's snow wonder that skiiers keep
coming back to enjoy the magic of this sport"?

Come to think of it, every Warren Miller film reminds you of every other
one. I'm almost certain I've seen duplicate footage, like a story about
the miniature train car ski lift at Gunstock NH.

Just watch the next one they show on MoviePlex Thursday night, it will
likely show up again...

If you've seen one, you've seen them all.

I guess so. It was kind of kitschy, with little cars running on top of
a track. I think it's probably gone now.

Yep. Gee, maybe it's time to go rent one at my local video store.
Talking about old ones "I live forever in Extreme Winter, Extreme,
Extreme, Winter, Winter". Duh.

Did anybody see the one where a couple of guys (I think the Eagan
brothers) are skiing down a steep ridge and a cornice "the size of an
apartment building" (Warren's description, and it's not too far off)
breaks off from under one of them, and the guy is skiing on empty air
for a second or two?

Then there's the one where they have cliff jumping scenes out at
Kirkwood, and they interview Paul Ruff, who's going on and on about how
it's really not as dangerous as it looks, how they plan it all out
beforehand, "because living sure beats dying". I always want to jump up
and shout "You dumbf*ck! You DID die in a cliff jump!".

Dave
