Trip report - Huntington, Vermont - 24 Jan 2004
I skied today at the Sleepy Hollow cross-country center in Huntington,
Vermont. Conditions were good to very good. No ice, and just a little bit of powder on a hard surface. About half the trails were tracked. They issued a caution advisory for the trail Trois Montagnes because there were a few bumps, but this was no worse than what you find regularly at the Stowe Mountain Resort on such trails as Bear Run and Houston. Stopped at their cabin for a lunch snack, and skimmed through an old paperback called "Ski Touring in New England and New York" by Lance Tapley. The author says that he and a couple of friends had the idea for a skiers' Long Trail in the 1960s and skied across the state in 1969, which would be some 15 years before the Catamount Trail founders did their inaugural traverse of the state. Probably there was a lot more open land in 1969, though. Lew Lasher Stowe, Vermont and Cambridge, Massachusetts |
