It does make a difference to know that folk are rooting for you, and nearly all the comments here have been positive and make me glad to be back. Bloody good to hear they've managed to fix everything up for you. I'm out of my straightjacket now, and going to physio at the end of the month. I crushed one of the thorassic vertebrae (No6) and will have a kink in my spine from now on. They decided it wasn't bad enough to warrant a risky operation and I guess I'm sort of relieved in a way. The op would have involved going in through the thorax from the front as well as the back, and they said there was a significant risk of damage to the spinal cord. To be honest though, the specialist didn't go into too much detail about the problems I may have in future with a 27 degree bend in my spinal column. I guess I'll just have to deal with whatever posture readjustment I have to make. ****. Oh well, sounds like the surgery would have been more risky. I was (sort of) given the option of no surgery, which would have meant being flat on my back for a whole three months. The surgeon seemed to feel that this was so obviously not desireable that of course I'd go with the surgery. The risk in my case was lower, but still there, of course. The pins were screwed in from the back only, but it's quite scary seeing the length of the screws (about 4") going into my spine. I nearly came a cropper yesterday, as it happens, when I slipped while squatting down to get to a kitchen draw and lost my balance. Went careering backwards and managed to catch myself on the kitchen table. God knows what might have happened had I fallen onto my back :-o But at least my spine will be straight - sounds like you're likely to have back problems for the rest of your life. Let's hope it's not too bad. -- Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) Ski Club of Great Britain - http://www.skiclub.co.uk All opinions expressed are personal and in no way represent those of the Ski Club. |

I've had back problems since I lifted a big bronze casting onto a machine 'cos the crane driver was on his lunchbreak. That was when I was 22 and I popped a disc, so I've had back problems for 20 years anyway. One more won't make too much difference. They've told me to stay off bikes and not to be heaving bikes around on and off centre stands and stuff. The pushbike I bought off ebay arrived today. :-) -- tallbloke |

.com: In article , says... They've told me to stay off bikes and not to be heaving bikes around on and off centre stands and stuff. Fair enough though. The pushbike I bought off ebay arrived today. :-) Does it have suspension I also won a seatpost with built-in suspension and a set of bouncy forks for the front which I can mount a disc brake on. Just waiting for all the bits to come now. I had a little pedal round on it as it is though, and it's a really high quality bike. 531 frame, mavic rims, new shimano gearset and derailleur, weinmann brakes very light, and a bargain at £85. Just need to make sure I don't hyperventilate and fall off the ****er... -- tallbloke "Property is nine tenths of the problem" - Dr Winston 'O' Boogie |
