Default Vote in the Bode/Benni shootout

http://shootout.usskiteam.com/

For what it's worth, my vote went to Bode only because there are four speed
events left (two DH and two SG) and only two technical events (one SL and
one GS). Now, Bode's been awful in SL this year, but he's capable of
winning all of these events. So, the odds are in his favor. Hope he pulls
it off. However, if Benni does win, it's still great because he's such an
awesome competitor and a very class act.

Good luck to both men. Either way, the best will win.

Mary:

Do you think that the majority of men want a good, close race and most
of the women are rooting for Bode?

I can't imagine why....

Martha
go Bode!

Quick, someone send him a boxful of Marker bindings.

Well ... a couple days later, and we're now down to one of each event, i.e.
the World Cup finals.

The two "extra" speed events didn't do as much for Miller as might have been
hoped
DH, Miller 4th, Raich 11th, net gain of 26 pts to Miller (so far so good)
SG, Miller 5th, Raich 4TH, net loss of 5 pts by Miller

So the two extra speed events netted Miller 21 pts in his lead over Raich,
making the gap 52 pts. For reference, 52 pts is about the same as the gap
(in a single race) between 1st-4th, 2nd-10th, 3rd-23rd or 4th-DNF (or 31st).
But another way (since there are four races left), 13 pts is about the same
as the gap (in a single race) between 3rd-4th, 4th-6th, 5th-8th, 6th-10th
.....

To win the overall cup, Bode needs either: (i) to do better in the speed
events, relative to Raich, than he did this weekend or (ii) to finish a
technical event.

If you look at the speed and technical events separately:

Start with the worst case on the technical side, and say Raich wins both
technical events and Bode finishes neither. In the two speed events, even if
Raich crashes in both, Bode needs to finish no worse than 1st and 4th or 2nd
and 2nd. Another thought: if Bode won both the speed events and Raich
finished 10th in both, they would tie for the overall World Cup.

Start with a sort of "middling" case on the speed side, and say they do
exactly what they just did this weekend. What has to happen in the technical
events? Well ... say Bode fails to finish either: if Raich gets two 7ths,
Bode wins the cup by a single point. Say Raich comes in 3rd in both: if Bode
gets two 11ths, he again wins by a single point. Say Bode wins one of them
(and crashes in the other): now Raich needs to be 2nd and 1st. A tougher
case: say Raich wins both of them: Bode needs to go 2nd and 3rd.

And incidentally, Maier is now just 182 points behind Miller, thanks to his
winning both events this weekend.
