If I opt not to drop the $300 for a suit what should I wear as the second
best thing?

As already noted, one possible "second best thing" would be to wear a suit
that costs a lot less then $300. Racers are always selling stuff in favor of
the latest and greatest. I paid $31.50 for mine.

I get a lot of hand-me-downs -- the only item I ever bought new was a
Spyder slalom suit which I bought at the annual Spyder sale. $100 it was.

No, it's live and in Boulder, CO, one weekend a year in December. Not
very helpful if you need something now; OTOH, it can be used to
rationalize a TRIP.
