I know it's for light planes, but surely someone offers a service. While
cost isn't much of an issue

a) I don't want to charter a plane just for myself
b) I believe the landing is difficult (short, sloped runway) and requires
particular experience

I believe qualified pilots have to undergo further certification to enable
them to fly in mountain areas. The runway is unbelievably short. I've heard
it costs in the tens of thousands to land there but I can't remember the
source. If you find out for sure could you let us know?

Helicopter transfer from Chambery was my next question - about 200 quid
each
for 4, not too bad.

That's more than the cost of an apartment for a week. I guess people have
different ideas of "not too bad"
Is that just one way as well? I have a nice video of a plane taking off
from Courchevel last year, it's enough to make you decide once and for all
that you wouldn't want to fly there. Plus you then have to get from the
airstrip to your accommodation.

If you are in 1800 it's only a 5 minute walk.

Depends on which bit of 1850, I know there is a bus, but I guess at those
prices you get a limo to meet you.

Certainly quite surreal gliding down the piste past it.
I suppose you could just don skis (or nasty snop mobile thingy) to the
expensive piste side hotel just down from there, or is it further over I
don't remember.

£800 quid to get from Chambery to Courchevel...

Not too bad? Your taking the ****, right? In what sense of the words is
this "not too bad"?

It looks OK in nice weather (good visibility, light wind, sun not lined
up with the runway as mentioned in an earlier post here). None of the
planes I watched used anything like the full length of the runway.
So if you can predict the weather, and it's going to be good, go ahead
and book a flight. If you wouldn't ski in it, your pilot mightn't want
to fly in it. Disaster is likeliest if you go for marginal or
unpredictable conditions then cajole or bribe the pilot to go against
their better judgement.

S'what I was thinking. Personally, when I shell out for a heli in the
mountains, it's to take me to the top of the mountain.

Would you want to fly with any pilot who does so 'against his better
judgement'...?
