Canadians... HELP!

While we're on this subject, I'm going to drive from Seattle to
Whistler in early Jan. My initial thought was to get an SUV.
However, an SUV is close to 3X the price of a full size car. I
realize it all depends on the weather, however any thoughts would be
welcome.

Thanks Andy... of course I'm in shape. In fact I'm a supreme athlete, a
machine... ;-)

To give you some idea, I've not had a beer for nearly 2 months... and I
don't know about Canada, but down here in Australia, that's an equivalent
sacrifice to laying down your life for a friend. I'm gonna be ready!!

If you can get something with all-wheel drive, like a Subaru, that
would be best. The Sea-to-Sky highway drive is incredibly beautiful,
and at the same time very dangerous. It's a two-lane windy road, often
icy, and sometimes gets thick fog. I don't think it depends on the
weather so much, I think it's a nasty drive all winter long. Ocean
mist and rain freezes on the road. I have heard it called the "killer
highway".

I can't address the Seattle element but I'm sure it could be easily dealt
with but, I took a shuttle from Vancouver International to Whistler and
the thought never even crossed my mind that the trip would have been
improved by a car. . . but then again, when I go on a boarding trip that's
all I do so if you're planning to sight see in the area a car may make
more sense, but for whistler it's all right there in walking or cheap taxi
(or even bus) distance.

You don't need AWD from Seattle to Whistler. It would be extremely rare for
the highway to whistler to require AWD. If it is you can park in squamish
and take the bus.

Well, you may not *need* AWD. But like I said before, I recommend AWD
for safety on that highway. There are more fatal collisions on that
road than on most other roads in BC:

Whatever car you get, drive carefully, don't follow the car in front
of you too closely. Leave plenty of room to stop, because the ice can
be difficult to see. It often just looks wet and you don't know it's
ice until you try to stop. Or, the shuttle sounds like a good idea
too.

But if you're careful you should be fine. It's a beautiful drive, and
Whistler's great. Have fun!

So it sounds like I don't NEED an AWD, but it can't hurt, and we'll have
heaps of room for gear etc.. so I've booked one for the Banff, Fernie, Big
White, Vancouver legs of the trip... then Coach transfer from Vancouver to
Whistler and back.

We're in no mad rush, so we'll take it steady, suck in some scenes, and be
fresh and pumped upon arrival!

Thanks one and all for input... all except the 'killer highway' call, which
obviously sucked immensely ;-)

If we're due to die, going out chasing the snow in BC would be fine! It's a
big trip for us from way down here!!
