kids ski/snowboard lessons at Solitude and Brighton Utah
I will be going to Utah the first week of April for a week with my
kids, age of 6 and 9. We plan to go to either Solitude and Brighton. They never ski or snowboard before and I plan to put them in ski school for at least 3 days. Would anyone have experience with the kid ski school at Solitude or Brighton? My 9 yr old son wants to learn snowboard while y 6 yr daughter is probably too young for that and we would have to put her in ski school. Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Beware the Utah ski resorts. The mormon missionaries, on requisite snowboards (for the 'cool' factor) will swarm your children on the hill. Dressed in white jackets and pants, they will surround your children. And like that, they are gone. Whisked away into the hidden religi-yurts scattered throughout the aspen-dotted woods of said resorts. After a quick indoctrination they will be expelled back onto the slopes, confused and weary. That night, at dinner, be prepared when your children ask you (as they stare through your forehead) "Father, do you like to read?" --Go to Colorado next time. |

In addition to this, the snow is very bad this year, really icy, it'll be hard to learn to do anything. And, all the liquor stores are in crime ridden areas and closed half the time, and you can no longer bring alcohol on a plane...Take the above advice, avoid Utah, go to Colorado. |

Well, if they were both interested in skiing, I'd say go to Alta. Yes, *Alta*. While it's world-reknown for high-pucker-factor terrain, it has a largish area that is well suited to beginners. But since snowboarding is in the equation Alta's probably out. I'd say Brighton over Solitude - there's much more beginner-friendly terrain at Brighton than Solitude, and there's a real chance that your kids would be able to ski top-to-bottom at Brighton at the end of the three days. Kids ski free at Brighton, so you'll save some $$$, but be aware that it's mobbed with Mormon families and their kids on Saturdays. //Walt |

[Ignore Morman posts by our least rational posters.] Brighton seems to be the boarder mecca in the SLC surrounds. For that reason alone I would take the kids to Solitude for the, well, solitude. No experience with the kids instruction there, but the wife had a lesson at Solitude years ago that she still talks about as excellent. BTW, 6 is not too young. Find a snow day-care; around here such comes with equipment, instruction, lunch, etc, and will make a real skier out of her in a couple of days. I don't know if Solitude has such; you may have to shop around websites. P.S. It's probably too late to rescue him from the throes of tv indoctrination, but your 9yo should know snowboarders are the least cool folks on the slope... and you should know first timer snowboarders fall more than first timer skiers, in ways that cause more damage; consider wrist braces and certainly a helmet. |
