Best way to train uphill skating on flat terrain?

Hop on the ferry mate ... thar's plenty O' hills across the pond ! You could
roller ski right off the ramp, up the path along the lake front, and do some
wicked intervals up up the bluff ! Spend the day skiing around (tour the
downtown area if you're real good), then crash (as in sleep) on the ride back
across in the evening !

Or he could just drive 45 miles to the east. If I recall, JP is from
Lansing, and I just finished a rollerski with 1200 ft of climbing
within an hour of Lansing. There are a couple other routes with 2000
ft on a 40 k loop. To me, the 90 min in a car once a week would be a
better investment than strapping a tire to one's waist, or whatever
other contraption one might come up with.

Yeah, I've thought about doing Kensington every now and then. That's
less than an hour away, east, near Brighton. A wonderful, huge, hilly
park, trail, bikepath and lakes system. I do get there a few times in
the fall. I'm just not much into cars.

We had a birthday party for my father-in-law yesterday in the hilly
countryside an hour west just NE of K'zoo. They had a hilly, woodsy
1-mile singletrack trail that I chased my kids around on. "Chase me!
Chase me!" Man, that was fun. Every time we hit a big uphill thru
those green, lush, humid woods, I just took off. Love them hills. I
could train there, too, every couple months when we get over there. (I
think I'll go run Rose Lake today, just to get another dose of that
humid green scene. That 5-min drive is all I can handle.)

We also went frog-catching at the big swampy mill pond next to the
woodsy trail, to stock my brother's farm pond with some big frogs. We
caught King Bull. That was great fun, too: used a barbless hook on 2
feet of mono at end of 15 foot sapling from canoe. The kids were very
quiet as we stalked King Bull. Dad was the only one to spot the frogs
all day, though, despite prize offers. Neat to see a beaver in the
area. And the big bass in the clear deep spots. That area is gorgeous,
would be nice to live over there someday.
