Skiers do not ski on wax. Wax is applied to a ski base to change the character of how the base interfaces with the type of snow you are skiing on. If the conditions call for a cold wax and you have been skiing in warm conditions, you may need several "coats" of wax (scraping and brushing in between) to clean and then condition the base for those colder conditions. For the best performance in some conditions, you might need to hand structure the base surface or use an anti-static wax / powder. Only experience with your skis and the types of snow you ski on can determine all of this. Of course this all assumes your bases can actually adsorb wax and they are not burned or otherwise sealed over. Many shops and ski areas have Swix and Toko rep's in a few times a year to give free clinics on waxing. Find one close by and head over! Pick one brand, buy the hydrocarbon (least expensive) grade and learn how it works from applying it and skiing on it. - Bob |
