There is talk about one in Holmestrand in Vestfold too. They would use about 1.7km of a car tunnel that is being retired. Part of the existing tunnel is to be used for a railway expansion, and the road part is to be abandoned as I understand it, and thus is available for skiing. A deep mountain tunnel like that I beileve wouldn't take too much work to get operational. I hope it happens (soon). Joseph |

A deep mountain tunnel like that I beileve wouldn't take too much work to get operational. I hope it happens (soon). That's an excellent idea! With the tunnel having about 70 m of rock above it, it shouldn't need any form of isolation at all, beyond a pair of doors at each end. :-) Terje -- - "almost all programming can be viewed as an exercise in caching" It would only need one set of doors! The other end is going to be sealed off where they reroute the train. Skiing in tunnels might actually be fun. A few weeks ago they had an "open day" at a new 1.3km tunnel in Tønsberg that will go into service soon. They invited folks to come walk/ski/ride through the tunnel. And to have waffels made on a huge waffle-iron made from a disused man- hole cover! I roller skied up and down several times. It was much darker than a ski tunnel would be, but it was pleasant enough. Joseph |
