But what about Sweden? In the 60's they switched from left hand drive to

I don't think Sweden had too many limited access roads with on/off ramps in
the '60s, they weren't too common in '73 when I was there. They certainly
didn't have modern freeway interchanges, which would really make switching
from left to right hand drive interesting.

At any rate, it wasn't an overnight switch, they spent quite a few years
planning, educating the public, and building cars with steering wheels o

markn the left well before the change actually happened.

I haven't had the "pleasure" of driving in Jersey for quite some time.
Do they still prohibit you from pumping your own gas? The last gas
lines I saw (prior to last week's power failure) were on the New
Jersey Turnpike - there wasn't a shortage, it's just that they had
only one attendent trying to deal with sixteen pumps.

Last one I saw was on the NJ Tpk on 12/27/2002 on my way up to Bretton
Woods. It was also the last time I needed to stop for gas there. Same as
you said - 'cept there were two addentants, 16 pumps, and about 100 cars.

Having been thru New Jersey twice in the past 3 weeks I can factually state
the cheapest gas prices between Virginia and Hew Hampshire are in New Jersey.

Don't then mind at all waiting while arthritic looking hardly moving hirees
do the pumping. (last Wed the NJ Tpk had gas for $1.46 /gal) elsewere in NJ
as low as $1.45 /gal.

query about traffic circles ...

Since anybody worth their salt can ski a complete circle using shaped
skis and decent technique, should there be traffic circles at trail
joins on the slopes? Maybe those speed jackals in patrol jackets would
go away if there were traffic circles?

I actually think it's more dangerous to walk. You tend to look the

I seem to remember helpful signs painted on the street in London saying
something like TRAFFIC COMES FROM RIGHT.

"LOOK RIGHT" or "LOOK LEFT" - there isn't space for any more.

BTW, a friend recently heard this announcement on a tube train:
"This train will not be stopping at Euston Square. Passengers for
Euston Square please alight here and continue your journey at street
level. For any Merkins on board, that was a euphemism for 'Get off and
Walk'. Thank you"

Get stuffed. The cheap stuff has been going up a nickel a day for the
last week or so and hit $2.019 today, up three cents from three hours
previous. I don't think I need to buy gas before Friday, so maybe we'll
have a miracle by then.

Lovely. Local communities have taken to cetting river rocks in cement in
their medians, 200 square feet of which seems to take a crew of 8 guys
three weeks to accomplish and ties up both inner lanes.

$2.13/gal for 89 octane last week in San Diego.

Around here they just emboss the concrete with "natural" rock patterns that
magically repeat every 10 feet.

Ha. You buy the expensive stuff. Am I the only one who kind of
remembers the jingle "100-octane costs you less at powerful Wilshire D."
Were there Wilshire stations in California, or am I remembering something
from a trip back east?

I've seen stuff like that on the freeway sound walls on both the 210 and
the 10. I was stuck in a traffic jam once and had time to notice the
repetition. Those actually look OK. What are awful are the plastic
fences that supposedly simulate natural wood painted white.

What are good are retaining walls built out of broken up concrete sidewalk
slabs. They look good enough to be used in the wealthy areas.

If you look carefully at the sound walls around Salt Lake City, you'll
see they have pictures of mountains etched into them. A nice touch,
although I'd rather look at actual mountains.

I guess this sorta counts as skiing-related content. Boy, it's been a
long summer.

You don't need a miracle. You just need to wait until about a week after
the holiday weekend. All of the price gouging should be over by then and
prices will start to return to normal. Their ought to be a law against this
BS.

Same today, maybe it's topped out.

Nope, gotta get a tank to go see my son Saturday. Hell, 20 gallons every
3 weeks isn't that big a deal, it's just the principle of the thing.
