One slight problem that can arise is that the rep, generally, will be
pretty good at finding the best snow and having a blast of a day's
skiing. So the report will therefore be based on the actual conditions
skiied that day, rather than the bits that we know to avoid, however
'fair' we try to be :-}

If you have trouble finding the same snow it is a good reason to join
the SCGB - at least the rep has had a chance to look around or ask his
predecessor where the best skiing / bits to avoid were.

Is Mailwasher any good?? - I get all the crap you talk about (viagra, penis
enlargement, on-line pharmaceuticals, AND the dodgy Nigerian business deals)
and log twice daily just to delete it all -it really is getting to be beyond
a joke. My wife's beginning to think that maybe I am dimensionally
challenged, think I cannot keep it up, need lots of drugs and have a
business interest in East Africa.

At least Hannah would have priority access to the lift queues if you
were the Director Sportif :-)

Ah, we can always dream... but no choice now, just bought a home in

BSM,
so any ski-related business ventures will have to be in the Savoie at
Savoie prices, unless I can come up with an unexploited niche business
that no one has thought of yet...

As it happens, I do know of a Savoie "ski à roulettes" (patent, supplier
contacts + 'goodwill', leisure grass ski market) business up for sale
for a pittance, but I get the feeling that the opportunities for
development are a bit restricted unless current conditions in the
Alps become the norm

Just heard the following from an instructor at 2 Alpes....

"Conditions are awful here, but better than Tignes, which I hear is
closed. Several other glaciers are closing and we've closed the Lauze
and the Croisiere Blanche now. They keep saying that we'll stay open

but
I don't see how we can. The nursery lift is off, the snow is

diabolical,
and I'm seriously considering abandoning at the end of the month. I
can't in all conscience sell beginners lessons if they have to walk

back
up the slope every time on foot, and it's not very interesting for
decent skiers any more. The lower half (yes - half) of the Puy Salie

is
now all moraine ice and the crevasses are opening everywhere. I've
nearly fallen into one twice in the last 2 days!"

So barring a dramatic change in conditions, sounds as if that's it for
this year on the French glaciers, folks.

Latest (today, Saturday) at Deux Alpes:

Froze overnight Thursday so conditions ok up to 1130/1200 on Friday, but
last night was warm and it was already sludgy at 0900. A significant
number of instructors in the resort allegedly feel that it would be
better if it closed, more responsible, and that it would be better
publicity for the resort to act before there are any serious accidents.
However "Deux Alpes Loisirs", (the lift company, with various other
interests, that virtually runs the place) is said to be out of pocket
each summer, and without August they'd be seriously in the red, so like
Tignes it looks as if they'll try to stay open as long as possible.

Yes, I downloaded the trial version and used it for a month before
paying a few dollars for the full upgrade. It is excellent, very simple
to use, and has saved me a lot of time, even without setting it to
autodelete messages from blacklisted sources (I'm afraid a bona fide
address might slip into the blacklist somehow and I would miss a genuine
email). So far, no problems in that respect though. One of the rare
shareware downloads that I have found really useful.

Tignes will not close before the 15/8 - and they are still hoping for
some snow. The weather is getting cooler and more unsettled.

Not exactly OT for this group, but I have to second the recomendation
for Mailwasher. I;ve tried all sorts of tools and this is the only one
I ended up paying for and keeping. It's easy to set up and use.

The latest Mozilla email clients will filter spam. Can't tell you if
it is as good as Mailwasher but anything to get rid of the Outlook
Express virus server is a good thing.

l'Alpe d'Huez closed on Saturday 26/7/2003. In theory they were going
to open until the end of August (this was the original program). The
summer ski area had been considerably redeveloped last year. The
glacier will now be closed until autumn half term.

I will endorse the recommendations about Mailwasher. I only use the
free version but certainly find it useful at keeping spam at bay. Best
aspect is the bouncing although some seasoned spammers have even found
a way around that.
