Default what do you do in the offseason? thinking of trying a new sport

The season is slowly coming to an end, to keep in shape I typically
run (very early mornings) and mountain bike, with the odd game of golf
and some hiking. I would golf more often if I could but its difficult
to coordinate consistent tee off's with everyone's busy schedule. I
have been thinking of scaling back the golf even further and getting
into rock climbing. Any climbers out there? How did you get into the
sport? Are there active climbing clubs you get together with, or do
you head out alone?

When I was in college I did some climbing. I had a geography professor
that was a world class climber and he spent as much time, in class,
talking about it. A group of us got together on weekends locally and a
couple of camping trips to give it a try. The short answer is: Look at
a university or college near by.

As for golf, don't bother rounding up a foresome. Fill in someone
elses group or go alone. Get a pass. Golf courses are making deals
these days.

Yes, the issue is I prefer to golf with folks who are around the same
skill level and actually follow the rules (I cringe at the liberties
taken by many), and prefer to golf with faster players (the guy who
plumb bobs putts on a double bogey).

Here, the Seattle Mountaineers have classes and a busy climb schedule. Look for
a local club.

Get good training if you want people to trust you enough to climb with you.

I bike to and from a volleyball games a couple time a week in the summer. 1 1/4
hour of riding each way, including some good hills, and 2+ hours of volleyball
makes for a good workout.

I started climbing a little with my brother after he attended Outward
Bound Camp in Maine, which included climbing in an old granite
quarry. We didn't have much gear, so we kept it simple and not too
difficult. Years later, when I started taking my kids to rock-
climbing gyms (usually a birthday party) I tried out some of the
walls. They are very safety-conscious and have all the gear
availalble. Some even let experienced climbers belay themselves, or
have an auto-braking system on some routes.

Running is one of the worst things you can do for your knees. Walking is one
of the best. Hiking combines walking with some of the things which probably
drew you to skiing.

Body surfing, but that is pretty much limited to areas near the warm
coasts.

Is it worse than skiing?
