Default Skiing in Lake Placid

Never been to Lake Placid even though we pass it by nearly every year
on the way from NJ to Quebec. I'm thinking about making a trip there
in late to mid January. Would you recommend any particular xc places
and also where to stay for a couple of days? It's going to be a family
of 2 adults and one 11-yr old, all decent skiers.

Actually, if for any reason the recommendation is NOT to go there, I'd
like to hear about other places in NY. Last year we checked out Salmon
Hills and Garnett Hill - both OK, but no comparison to VT and QC. I
guess Maine is an obvious destination, but by then we might as well go
to Quebec again.

Thanks!

Larry

You want to ski at Mount van Hoevenberg of course. But off the beaten
track, Paul Smith's College has great ungroomed trails.

Larry,

I would echo what Jim said... you WILL want to go to Mt VanHoevenberg- to
ski on the olympic trails, but....
Cascade Ski Touring Center has some wonderful trails for classic skiing
that are groomed well, but narrower and let you feel a little more like
you are "out in the woods" skiing (Like I remember skiing more in the 70's
and early 80's)

Beside that....
Lake Placid has MANY places in and just out of town to snowshoe and even
ski... (groomed/un-groomed) (Jim mentioned Paul Smiths College and the Adk
Visitor Interpretive Center is right near the college, but those are both a
30 minute drive from LP (worth the drive, but a drive))

There is also (in January) Dogsled rides on Mirror Lake, the possibility
of watching ski jumpers @ the intervale jumping complex, Whiteface mtn for
alpine/snowboarding, the bobsled and luge tracks out at the Mount
VanHoevenberg sports complex, and speed-skating on the olympic oval right
in town...

Also, there are hundreds of miles of trails in the High Peaks Region (and
like I said... all around Lake Placid as well) probably well skied in.

Apres (sp?) skiing, we have the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery which brews
some great beers and the Great Adk Brewing Company (in the Steak and
Seafood Rest.) that has some wonderful suds, too!

What more could you want

Have a great vacation!!!

Randy

Mount Van Ho as others have mentioned. The biathlon course has a lot
of nice rollers and is my favorite. Some of the other trails do a lot
of climbing so you should have pretty good fitness skiing up and good
descending skills for the trip down. Easy skiing on the lighted trails
at Crandall Park in Glens Falls on the way up to Lake Placid. The
place was one of the first light for xc in the country and the racing
scene was pretty good there back in the day.
