Default Garnet Hill next week anyone?

I'll be at Garnet Hill for an extended family vacation next week,
Tuesday late through Friday or maybe Saturday (Jan 13-16 or 17).

Any chance of running into other rsn-ers there?

Doug? John? Ken? others?

Having never been there before, can anyone tell me if there are
other activities nearby that might interest kids between 2 and 4
years old? I'm not expecting their attention span for skiing to
last very long. Ice skating or other attractions?

Our best ski outings with the 2-year-olds have been those that started
right after lunch. We pile them in the pulks and start skiing and
usually within a few minutes they fall asleep for their afternoon
naps. We get to ski for an hour or two while they sleep, though we
do have to pull them around. By now they are hopefully big enought to
start taking an interest in skiing on their kiddie skis for short
periods.

Default Salt Lake City next week anyone?

Sharon and I managed to get some extra days off over with the Martin Luther
King holiday, and Sharon insists that she get the chance to make some great
lift-served and backcountry downhill turns already this early in the season.
So I'm getting dragged away from my beloved northeastern trails of
Minnewaska and Mohonk and Van Hoevenberg -- to Utah.

Should I bring my soft-snow skis? Or will the tracks be pretty well packed?

It would be fun to meet some of you there in Salt Lake. Send me email, and
I'll send you phone numbers and places where we'll be staying so we can
figure out how to connect. We'll have a rental car, so we can get to
different ski centers and backcountry trailheads.

I will be expected to accompany Sharon on most of her downhill and
backcountry turning escapades, but there will be some other days when I'll
get to enjoy some fun skating on groomed tracks. I figure it'll take me at
least a couple of days to get used to the altitude, so I'm going to be
looking for lower-elevation ski center at first. Like my current best guess
is that I'll try skating at Mountain Dell on Monday afternoon.

Sharon likes White Pine for its gentle trails, so I'll probably be skating
there one day at least. Beyond that I'm pretty open. Something I'd love to
try is skating some routes outside the normal ski centers -- like I sorta
remember some reports by Dave Hanscom.

In terms of activities for kids I'm not sure. I remember often seeing
a bunch of kids in some sort of ski-school or play group with a young

Thanks but after looking at the long-range forecast it probably
doesn't matter. Ithaca forecast shows high temps those days between
0 and 10 F. Garnet Hill is probably colder than Ithaca. The kids
might never get outside. :-(
