50K Club Report 10-12-03

It was a great day for rolerskiing in the Afton Hills on Sunday,
October 12th.

News out of Duluth, Minnesota put a damper on things though as word
came of the death of Gene Marsolek. Geno, married to one of the best
master skiers in the country, JoAnne Hanowski, was also a great skier.
He was 52 years old and was a pilot. He crashed his plane into Island
Lake west of Duluth. Though not in the same age group, I raced against
Geno many times over the years and it was the rare occasion when I
beat him. Usually, he was sick or had slow skis... He was usually in
the Top 200 wave of the American Birkebeiner every year. Anyway, his
death is a big loss for Duluth skiing and skiing in the Midwest.

Back to less important things, those rollerskiing the famed Afton
Hills included Jay Wenner, Mary Beth Tuttle, Pete Thurmes, Tim
Trudeau, Bob Woodruff, Bills Kosfeld, Stuber and Quinn, Steve Clancey
and me, Jay Tegeder. John O'Connell's car was in the parking lot as we
returned. Anyway, Woody, Thurmes, Wenner, Mary Beth and Trudeau skied
ahead of the rest of us. Quinn skied on his own but Clancey, Stubes,
Kosfeld and I hung together. We got in 3 hours including the big
Coulee climb and the return climb on Indian Trail.
