Looking for a new headlight for the dreaded after work roller skiing in the
dark. Petzl's look okay, but I want a rechargable battery set up. Mila
lights were mentioned at R.S.N., but rather pricey. Any info would be
appreciated.

Sorry, but Mila and Silva are your only real options.

Definitely not cheap, but at least for night-orienteering, the only
thing worth having.

_ You can get rechargeable NiMH batteries now in both AA and AAA
sizes. They work fine in my Petzl headlamp. Don't last quite as
long as Alkaline, but good enough.

You might consider the NightPro Headshot (www.marwiusa.com). I've
used one for skiing (my wife won it as a door prize at the 24 Hours of
Telemark a couple years ago) and it is really good. It is much
brighter than a Petzl, but guessing from Terje's response, it probably
doesn't match the Silva or Mila for output. Perhaps a reasonable
middle ground. The battery pack is really quite light, which is nice;
the headband is good too.

Have you looked at helmet mounted headlights that cyclists wear?
Some of them are very bright and come with huge rechargeable pack.
And you most likely get a discount price on those.

Living up here in Alaska, in the darkness of winter, my choice is the Black
Diamond Supernova with the ultra bright bulb and the rechargeable pack.

I ended up making my own set-up after some ideas from my fellow friend
and xc skier, Ralph.

I bought small re-chargeable 12v motorcycle batteries (sealed) and a
20º narrow beam 12v MR-16 low voltage lamp. I used an old lamp holder
from an emergency light(the kind that you see on the walls in
buildings) to hold the MR-16. I then wired everything together with a
small switch on the lamp holder. I put the batteries in a fanny pack.
This set-up creates a narrow beam that lights up at least 30ft. down
the trail and the batteries last for a good 2 hours.

It takes some time to put this together, but it's an alternative for
someone that wants something custom. My friend, Ralph also has the
same set up and has installed his lamp holder on an old bike helmet,
permenantly. I use a flexible headband to hold my lamp holder.

When I am skiing or rollerskiing and other people see how much light I
have, they always stop to see what brand light I have.
