Default Modern alpine skiing FAQ?

Preface: I haven't skied [alpine] in 15 years. I took my family out
to the local mountain this past Sunday and we all had a blast. The
equipment we rented was far different than the stuff I used in 1990. I
used to ski 190cm boards and *wrestled* them down Great Scott
[Snowbird], Corbet's Coulier [Jackson Hole], and Sudan Coulier
[Whistler-Blackscomb] years ago. Now skis seems to have very user
friendly profiles/cambers and the rental guy said that everyone is
using shorter skis today. A lot of people were skiing these short,
wide skis with upturned tips on both ends and having a blast! The
rental equipment worked great and we're going skiing for a week in
northern Vermont in late March. We're [my wife and I] looking to
purchase gear during the upcoming late season ski sales and need
advice. Kids will continue to rent

Rather than searching newsgroups & websites for specific answers to my
*many* questions, can anyone direct me to a GOOD online modern alpine
skiing FAQ?

Thanks a lot!

Renting for kids is absolutely the way to go. In
fact many ski shops around here have year lease
deals for kids. That is, you rent the skis for the
whole season and turn them in at the end. Next
season you do it all over again at the beginning.
Best ever for fast growing rugrats.

For you and your wife, buy boots. By the time you
get here (Vt) in March, there should be some good
sales going on, but still a reasonable selection.

Buy the boots from a reputable shop which has
a good, knowledgeable boot fitter.

I'd guess anywhere from 30 to 50 percent off on
this year's models and more for last year's.

Demo skis for a while until you find out what you
really like, then go for a pair of used demo skis
at the end of the season, or check ebay. As long
as you know what you want, ebay is OK.
