Default getting better grip with waxless skis

Last weekend I went skiing with my 3 year old waxless skis. I am noticing
that I have very little grip. How can I improve this?

Thanks,

Micheal

Can you do that?

How would you remove it?

Is there a colour for all temp, or would i join the ranks of the waxers

Thanks,

Micheal

The guy who suggested kick wax may have been half serious, but getting
it out is a major problem.
My Fischer Cruisers seem to have lost some of their kick (and glide
too). Both of these were improved when I cleaned the base (including the
fish scales) with a base cleaner. If you see noticeable wear on the
scales, chances are they will not grip as well (but probably will glide
better!)

Oh dear, I'm afraid it was only a guess !

If I recall correctly, I read about it somewhere on this newsgroup or in
a book. The guy said that as waxless skis become worn and lose grip,
they are in fact becoming like waxable skis, so use kick wax.

Maybe someone else on this ng who's more knowledgeable will be able to
help you out with the finer details.

That is what is happening... it is getting to the point that I cannot climb
hills easily.

What is my solution, besides replacing them?

Thanks,

Micheal

Keep in mind that the grip is not the only thing that has worn down over the
years. The camber has probably also gotten softer too.

That said, is it possible that it was just the conditions of the day that were
more at fault?

It's true that I was only half serious, but I found the book : Cross
Country Ski Repair and Maintenance by Seth Masia from Contemporary Books
Inc ISBN 0 8092 4717 8. It's an old book (1987) and is surely out of
print now.

He says in Chapter 5 about waxless skis : "As skis grow older...kicker
pattern...will wear out... Solve this by applying grip wax to the kicker".

I'd quote some more but that's the essence of it and I don't want to run
into copyright problems.

What is that? Can it be fixed?

It has become harder to grip, I bet if I went out now, they would be worse.

So, shall I pull out an iron, and iron what is left of the fishscales away?

Thanks,

Micheal

This thread is proceeding as if you've been skiing on these things
everyday for the past three years and leaving them in a warm or hot
place over the summer where the camber might soften, but I don't see
anything from you to that effect. If you let us know where you were
skiing and what the air and snow conditions were, I think you'll get
more knowledgeable help. The one thing we can't tell is about your
technique, but let's look at the other factors before falling back on
that.
