What do you all want to read about?
Dear ski friends… The Athletes of the US Cross Country Ski Team – lead
by Andrew Johnson, have put together a fund raising project which includes a web site www.teamtoday.org that we will be up dating regularly. What I want to know is what the ski community wants from a web site. There are a lot of great sites that deliver a lot of great info (skinnyski, fasterskier, xcskiworld, usskiteam, skipost - etc). We want to complement rather than compete with these existing sites. Taking into account that this will be run by the athletes and to a lesser degree the staff of the US team what do you want to read about? So far we have thought to write up training, racing and random stories, training info, training and camp opportunities, preparation ideas… etc. In other words what can we do through this site to help the American ski community? The next question is what can we do to get the American ski public involved in supporting the athletes of the US Team? How can we get more people to contribute? Besides raising money for the athletes' training and racing, we want to bring skiing to a new level in the US. We hope our efforts both through racing and communicating with the public help with this goal. You can email me if you'd like but even better please post your ideas here. www.teamtoday.org Thanks for your ideas, support and enthusiasm for cross-country ski racing, Pete Vordenberg US Cross-Country Ski Team Assistant Coach |

I like reading " A day in the life of a ski racer" type stuff. As in your
book, I'm sure there are tons of funny/sad life stories. Lee Fitzgerald |

What do you all want to read about?
I agree with Lee... Get to know the USST members articles. I think
it's important to know who we are supporting. Race stories would be good too. Throw in some pictures of our favorite skiers. Plus some interviews with some of the top Euro racers. I'm not a technique freak but I think many skiers would appreciate Pete's instructional stuff. Someone needs to come up with a biography page for all of the top racers complete with pictures... Maybe that's more than you guys want to take on. I'll support whatever you do though. Thanks for coming up with this idea. Oh yeah, how about details on some of your favorite wax/structure combinations? Jay Tegeder "Keep training, lycra never lies!" JT "Fitzgerald" wrote in message news:RtXjc.9343$RE1.907856@attbi_s54... What do you all want to read about?
I really liked Pete's season reports and strategy explanations and updates from last year. Not
just a "this happened to me" but what are we thinking about where we're going and how is the progress coming along in same. I appreciated how candid he was. His tech tips were great, too (press knee to ski tip really helped me on steep uphills). -- Jeff Potter **** *Out Your Backdoor * * http://www.outyourbackdoor.com publishing do-it-yourself culture ... bikes, skis, boats & more ... plus radically relevant novels at the ULA's LiteraryRevolution.com ... free music ... tons o' articles ... travel forums ... Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mr. Vordenberg, My two cents. Information related to making XC skiing better is ultimately the value-add of your website. That is a primary reason I enjoy the email strings of this forum so much. If I could take the 'lessons learned' from the responses to a topic and store it in a website for future reference, that would be valuable to me. Might even pay for it. One other thought...sometimes 'reading' isn't what I want to do, but 'gaining information' is. Conveying information visually is a powerful way to teach. The use of video, animated simulations and interaction with the information make the learning experience much richer, and enjoyable. Drills, techniques, helpful hints could all be done in this 'rich' medium.
So far we have thought to write up training, racing and random stories, training info, training and camp opportunities, preparation ideas? etc. In other words what can we do through this site to help the American ski community? Pete you are amazing, for asking. I hope you get what you want from the community, from that site. Keep us in the loop on what you guys are doing for training so we can scale it down for our own purposes. Let us know more about: * technique because Kris Freeman says we are stuck in the 90's technique wise * I liked the small bit on Swedish stomp skate sprinting, like Marathon Skate * How to stay healthy while training big hours & racing frequently * Structure & waxing without giving away your secrets please * How about food; protein, carbs, Gu's, drinks etc. * "The day in the life" stuff like Dussault writes, and the SFT team ski posts. Those are great, esp from the World Cup * Sprinting...world cup does a lot of sprinting. Other than Zach, how are we focusing on springing ? The next question is what can we do to get the American ski public involved in supporting the athletes of the US Team? How can we get more people to contribute? I would like to contribute money by purchasing US Nordic Ski Team Gear, like that thin white hat you guys have, and other official stuff. That would be cool. Maybe warmups. I'm planning on buying that book. Thats a cool idea. !!!! New idea; include a killer DVD with the book - or separate ! Walk around w/video camera doing everyday life; your daily training sessions (who's that chundering in the weeds ?), and race days & film behind the scenes stuff, like that busines with Andrew Johnson washing your skivvies by hand in the sink. Kinda gross, but kinda cool, just because you are on the ski team. That sort of stuff. Vignettes on running 5k's @ SoHO, plane rides, euro-hotel rooms, what do they eat over there, recovery skiing on days off, etc etc. You could run with that one. You guys get to lead quite a cool but tough life. Put in film, it would make a great DVD. |

What do you all want to read about?
Fun + Excitement
I have not often re-visited existing websites associated with the US team because the training and technique ideas seemed like "yet another boring set of right answers". And lots of the other stuff seemed narrowly focused on traditional racing -- except some of your stories. I need a higher ratio of fun. Then I read your book and found out you guys were doing lots of fun and exciting things beyond racing. And I remember liking the way Luke's book gave so much attention to the other fun and exciting things that were sorta integrated with the skiing/racing lifestyle -- like heading out-of-bounds up some nearby mountain with skis, or training in little-known European ski villages and meeting girls. Now I'm hearing stories that the winning Norwegian skiers were doing lots of fun things and exciting skiing on the side (which their Norwegian coaches often did not approve). Over-emphasis on the grimly-serious one-dimensional goal of shaving seconds off race times is not going to work long-term in 21st century America. Not for recruiting teenage racers with the best winning potential -- there's not enough money in traditional cross-country ski racing -- so the team has to offer something more. (Sponsors -- you know better than I if the old one-dimensional approach is working with them -- but the website is going to open to everybody). Pushing the limits on new kinds of fun and adventure on light skis, and to new levels of achievement and excitement. That's the set of national team racers I can get interested in. I bet that's what some of the national team athletes are doing already. The point is to communicate that reality. Present the leading racers as overall exciting super-capable people who do lots of fun outdoor/snow things -- as overall brilliant athletes who can master any complicated sport, but _choose_ to exhibit one of the dimensions of their mastery by engaging in serious cross country racing. ? Technique: Only if you can make it fun and playful. Videos only if they convey fun, or if they're from exciting parts of real races. ? Training: If it's going to be sustainable long-term in modern America, it's got to become more fun -- not just say it but exemplify it. (If you had a list of team members' favorite backcountry skating tours near Bend and other places, then I'd check the website for that). ? Travel to fun places: One of the key perks to dangle for recruiting. (but when is October training going to get moved from Fairbanks to Italy?) ? New events: What new things are some national team racers trying that could be more exciting for TV and spectators? Let's show off the _confident_ athletes and coaches who are enlarging the winter-sports-entertainment pie. ? New achievements: It doesn't have to be an official "competition" in order to be worthwhile for the website -- could be a one-time skiing or athletic achievement. A good time for these might be April -- still lots of snow around, not interfere with race-training focus, use the tremendous speed-endurance capabilities. Ken |
