ski resorts that are close proximaty to airports
I want to ski in Europe and I noticed on the Zermatt Switzerland website that it is a 5 hour train ride from Zurich. I hear it's a scenic train ride but 5 hours seems a bit too much. I've been a little spoiled by the 45 minute drive from Salt Lake City airport to the slopes. And just about every ski area in North America is less than 2 hours from the airport. In Europe, are there any major ski areas relatively close to a major airport? Austria resorts? France? |

Flumserberg is the nearst from the Airport www.flumserberg.com 2.25h by train and bus Klosters/Davos www.klosters.ch www.davos.ch 2.5-3h depend on the train. With a car you have still 2.5h till Davos. If it got traffic jam you need easely 1-1.5h more. Arosa www.arosa.ch 3-3.25h by train Lenzerheide/Vallbella www.lenzerheide.ch 2.75-3.25 by train and Bus Flims/Laax www.laax.ch ~3h by train and bus Berneroberland: Adelboden www.adelboden.ch ~3h by Train and Bus Zweisimmen www.zweisimmen.ch ~3 by train Time Table and Price at SBB (Swiss Railway) www.sbb.ch Johannes |

If you post to rec.skiing.resorts.europe you'll find some pretty knowledgeable people on this topic. Briefly, with respect to France, Geneva is around an hour's drive (50 miles) from Chamonix, two hours or so from the likes of Tignes, Val d'Isère, 3V in the Savoie. French airports that are closer have few direct flights, even from the UK. As for Austria/Switzerland etc I've only ever driven there (I live in France), so you'll need to ask over on rsre. I usually go to a nearby mountain with an older, friendlier operation which will remain nameless because I really don't recall it's name and I don't think anybody would be interested anyway. Maybe it was the mood I was was in, but I just wasn't into it, despite the massive lodges and marble midmountain bathroom facilities. The gondolas seem like a great idea, but I don't care to take equipement of and on between runs. And it seemed expensive even for a rich guy like me. Is this anybodys "favourite" place to go? Dave |

Before the "improvements" I liked it pretty well. Even the allowance of the evil two legged groomers was not too big of a problem, there was sooooooo much to ski. It took a bit of hiking and traversing now and then but you could literally ski powder all day. I liked it well enough to take the hour to drive there to go skiing a few times per year when I lived in a ski town. pigo |

If you fly to Geneva then Zermatt is closer I believe - about 2-3 hours I think. Chamonix is only 45 mins to an hour from Geneva. More suited to advanced skiers only though. Both Zermatt and Chamonix have the most amazing scenery. David. "J.W." wrote in message ...
