Default anyone ever injured this way?

i cannot figure out what happened to me. i feel like i broke a rib in
my
right lower rib cage. i was skate skiing a few days ago and one of my
friends inadvertantly ran over my ski basket on the right side just as
i was pulling the pole up with my right arm. instead of pulling the
pole up i fell backwards but it was a controlled slow fall so if that
caused this i fail to see how. it did not begin hurting until the next
day.

i have broken ribs before usually going over the handlebars of bicycles
and that is what this feels like - maybe not quite as bad as a broken
rib but close. motrin helps and strangely enough sleeping on my right
side feels much better than on my left side or back even though the
pain is on the right.

anyone know what i have? i have a kayak race this saturday if it is
still hurting i may not show up.

Well, I'm not a doctor and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express
last night, but I can empathize with you. In October I took a nasty
crash on rollerskis and landed on my side/back. My pain was immediate
though, maybe yours is just one of those delayed onset muscle soreness
thingies. Anyway, my rib x-rays were negative but I was in extreme
pain for several weeks. Laying on my back in bed was not an option for
weeks. I never quit rollerskiing though and just grit my teeth and
dealt with the pain. Unfortunately, I fell once cutting firewood at
Thanksgiving and once on skis after the initial accident and re-injured
the ribs. It has plagued my entire ski season. I'm just now getting
to 95% recovered - just in time for Mora and the Birkie (crap...now
I've jinxed myself). I have stayed away from pain killers. The more
I hear about the side-effects of ibuprofin the more I stay away from
that stuff.
I haven't answered your question (simply sounds like blunt trauma
injury to the surrounding tissues), but as you know from your first rib
break, rib injuries are a devil to heal. Good luck.

I'm not a doctor and I won't play one on the internet.

However, I fell rollerskiing on a descent in the Fall of 2003. I landed on my right arm and pole - HARD. I did not have any pain and continued rollerskiing.

However, the next morning I had sever pain in my right rib cage. It persisted for 2 weeks - it turned out to be a cracked rib.

There wasn't much I could do except rest. I kept training and the pain lasted a month or so...

You might think about getting an X-ray and an expert opinion....

Best of luck,

Jim

I have "subluxed" a rib before, and it felt similar to what you are describing. Essentially, the rib gets slightly dislocated, and the muscles running over it cause a lot of pain. When it happened, anti-inflammatories didn't do much good because they didn't resolve the source of the inflammation. However, a visit to the chiropractor did help. It took a couple of weeks before it was totally back to normal, though.

If that's what's going on, I suspect that the kayak race isn't going to happen this week, but one in 2-3 weeks should be OK.

good luck!
Chris

I did some heavy coughing after a training session and bruised a rib.
Couldn't ski or jog for about a week. After 2 weeks all of the pain was
gone. Sounds familiar? You could of course also have a muscle injury I
guess.

saw a physiatrist. (physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor).
he thinks it is an intercostal muscle tear or strain.
told me i would be better in 1 to 6 weeks no matter what i did.
i figure 2 weeks because that is how long it takes rib fx to heal in me.

I am a physician and will preface this with the statement that without
examing you there is no way to make a firm diagnosis and all I am
offering are suggestions of diagnoses based on what you have provided.
You should always visit your own doctor is you have questions or if
symptoms persist (Sorry about this, but we do practice in an unusual
environment).

You can hurt you chest wall in many ways, but the three most common are
to break a rib, injure the junction of the rib and the sternum, or to
injure the muscles between the ribs (intercostal muscles). It sounds
like you may have strained/tore an intercostal muscle. This gives
exactly the same symtoms as a broken rib, though not as bad. Recovery
is usually faster than for a broken rib (7-21 days vs. 14-42 days for
ribs), with pain being treated with anti-inflammatory drugs
(ibuprofen). Recovery is expedited with rest, if possible.
