best transfer geneva to Arc2000 for 11 people?

Drove down to Annecy on the Friday via Frangy, stopped in an Etap, I've done the same on many occasions, but I'd heartily recommend the Annecy centre Kyriad, which is built into the old town wall and therefore right in the heart of things. About 50 restaurants within a five minute strolling distance. Yeah that would have been better but was full. The Etap was in the middle of nowhere and we ended up in a " Quick" burger or the like. then left at about 8am and was checked in and on the slopes having hired skis just after lunch. We'd normally aim to leave around 7, then be skiing by 9:30 or so. Breakfast can wait until coffee time. No traffic to speak off doing the Frangy route. Went down the A39 from Dijon missing Dijon, Chalon, Macon and Lyon and lots of traffic. Does anyone still drive via Lyon? I gave up doing so in about 1998 when I first discovered the 'new' bit of A39 from Dole. In fact IIRC I had a boot fitting appt at 11.30 and we had checked in and got kids skis before this. Ah, that explains the 'slow' start. Boots were initially fitted on the sat morning, shop, Nevada Sports, very quiet, I was told to ski on the them until Mon evening then come back for foot beds / adjustment. Another hour or so on the Monday and they are now perfect. |

Can't say there was any difference in the time and no real traffic either way, but that's what you get for driving on a Wednesday I guess. I'd certainly think twice about it at peak times on a Saturday during half term.. Matt |

If you're heading for the Tarentaise or anywhere above Albertville there's probably little in it, but if you're heading further south, e.g. anywhere that will take you via Grenoble, then it may well actually be quicker via Lyon (or more precisely *around the edge* of Lyon on the A432 past the airport, particularly if arriving via the A39 then A42). John. I always go down the A39 from Dijon to Lyon Airport and hence to the tarrentaise. I tried the route through Annecy once I got held up in huge traffic jams (about 2 hours!) so I will not try again. It may have only been because it was summer but traffic from the entrace to Annecy to past the lake was just one one crawl. From then on it was fine. I think Ace was refering to going across to the A6 and past Macon when he was saying "via Lyon". However, I have a friend living in Grenoble who takes that route when driving to Grenoble because he argues it costs less in tolls. For me after a hard nights driving I do care about the extra few euros. BTW I do the drive 3 times a year. John |

I tried the route through Annecy once The best route, IME, joins the Autoroute just one junction N of Annecy, so you get straight into the centre. I got held up in huge traffic jams (about 2 hours!) so I will not try again. It may have only been because it was summer but traffic from the entrace to Annecy to past the lake was just one one crawl. It's always the slowest part of the journey, but early morning in Ski Season is not usually a problem. I think Ace was refering to going across to the A6 Dunno about 'across'. The A31 continues straight past dijon and becomes the A6. Both referred to as the E21. and past Macon when he was saying "via Lyon". Well, in Pre-A39 days that'd have been the only route, yes. However, I have a friend living in Grenoble who takes that route when driving to Grenoble because he argues it costs less in tolls. For me after a hard nights driving I do care about the extra few euros. BTW I do the drive 3 times a year. You should try the other way again then. Clrearly it depends somewhat on your driving style, but even avoiding Lyon as you do (and there's not so much need now since they built the A46) it's still quite a lot out of your way to the Tarentaise. Personally, of course, I never go anywhere near Lyon these days, given where I live, but I still regularly use the Annecy route from Geneva to the Tarentaise. -- Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) Ski Club of Great Britain - http://www.skiclub.co.uk All opinions expressed are personal and in no way represent those of the Ski Club. |

Ok, booked the motors now. Best this year seemed to be through
www.easycar.com. It beat Budget and Europcar easily. 8 days for a B size with winter pack came it at just over £170. Thanks all, John "Ace" wrote in message ... Tourism Office might well also know of drivers with 14-seaters, too (I've used one in the past for a longer group transfer but don't have a contact, I'm afraid). Train into Bourg + cab(s) could be a worthwhile option. Execept that the train will take 4-5 hours and one or two changes. Really not a goer, IMO. Best by far to use one of the many transfer specialists or, as stated earlier, just book large rental cars, which may well work out cheaper, and will get you there in about 2-2.5 hours under normal traffic conditions. -- Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) Ski Club of Great Britain - http://www.skiclub.co.uk All opinions expressed are personal and in no way represent those of the Ski Club. |
