Does anyone have experience with a program that makes high quality
maps for races? We are looking for course distance and a profile.
Thanks.

All the best orienteering maps in the world are made using OCAD, one or
more previous version is free.

Adobe Illustrator, hands down...in conjunction with various other programs.

Wow, Terje. I know one of the best American O-cartographers who
would be disappointed to learn about this. Last I talked to him
he had 0CAD and would use it if requested, but much preferred his
own custom setup on Macintosh.

In the end the software is just another tool. The quality of the
map is much more due to the talent of the cartographer.

I really didn't know about that, all the maps I've seen for several
years have had OCAD tags on them. :-)

As well as due to the talents of the original stereo photo analyst who
makes the base map, as well as the field surveyor (who is often the same
person as the cartographer).
