Bear Mt 2-22-13

Blubird! Yeahyeahyeah. When isn't it? Great snow. Softer than I like. The snow on Ego Trip is usually firm longer than on the other runs, and it's generally not crowded. Unfortunately, yesterday they closed it all morning for racing. BUT given that the only lift running was #2, we saw NOBODY on it until around 10:45, when we saw half a dozen guys going down at once. East Why is almost as good, but the snow seems softer for some reason. If tey're going to close a run to the public for racing, why not start racing at or 7:30 or8:00 so they can open it sooner? They also didn't open #7 until late, apparently not realizing that there was a HUGE crowd. They had entry lanes set up on #3 and #7, which I haven't EVER seen; Mostly there's just a couple of people ahead of you when you arrive. We only went on a Friday because previous days were unsuitable. If this is representative (the Patrol guy said it was due to the new snow) I'm absolutely certain I'm right in avoiding holidays, weekends, Mondays and Fridays. I've actually had good days at work that were better than yesterday :-( crowded only on Ch 9 late morning - which I avoided by skiing elsewhere. That explains it. They were all at Summit. Elaine and I agreed that it was the worst day we'd ever had jointly (3, maybe 4 years), and it was second in awfulness only to the day I broke two ribs. Geronimo snow condition was as good as I have ever seen. I wore myself out. Likewise (by 11:30), but it was due to constant braking to avoid the unpredictable moving slalom gates. On hard snow I can go until 1:00. Still haven't finished tweaking the GPS stuff. I really envy those pretty android/iphone GPS apps, the stuff available to my Garmin Forerunner 201 is pitiful and requires wrestling to the ground in order to accomplish anything. -- Cheers, Bev ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++ "...so she told me it was either her or the ham radio, over." |

As for the crowds - many local schools had last week off for Winter Break since Monday was a holiday anyway. My season pass was blacked out Sunday and Monday, so I planned to go Tuesday, but the weather and roads kept me home. Wednesday was out because I was scheduled to help with the HS soccer game, but that was postponed late in the day because of the snow and ice on I-8 (the opponent was driving in from Calexico). Thursday was out because of the rescheduled game, so I had to go Friday. It is my ambition to go one day a week or more until they shut down or my truck dies. Chair 1 is still broken? At least on the Sunday I went with my son they started up Chair 11 to relieve some of the crowd. |

OK, I did it. 13 runs, top speed something like 35 mph, not counting on the road before I remembered to turn it off :-( Spent way too much time in the #2 lift line. As for the crowds - many local schools had last week off for Winter Break since Monday was a holiday anyway. My season pass was blacked out Sunday and Monday, so I planned to go Tuesday, but the weather and roads kept me home. Thursday was out because of the rescheduled game, so I had to go Friday. It is my ambition to go one day a week or more until they shut down or my truck dies. That's what I've been trying to do. Last year I got in 15 days spread over 6 months. This year so far: 7. Chair 1 is still broken? At least on the Sunday I went with my son they started up Chair 11 to relieve some of the crowd. Somebody said major overhaul. A Person who appeared to have some Authority said it would be open 'weekend efter next' which I guess means 7 days from today. Last time a glop of roller-grease dropped onto my WHITE jacket and I tried to brush some of it off with my black glove :-( They said they'd clean it and have it ready for me when I came up next time. Unfortunately it was in the Bear Mountain office -- I didn't have time to either go or wait, so they said they'd bring it to SS security and will be there next time. We'll see. -- Cheers, Bev ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++ "...so she told me it was either her or the ham radio, over." |

(why ask the patrol guy if you're not going to hear what he says?) I tend not to believe people who have a vested interest in the answer to the question, especially if the answer is too glib. I've been there on first no-chain days after a nice dump and it's NEVER been like this. Monday/Friday has GOT to be a major part of the problem; the closure of Chair #1 doesn't affect the total number of people on the hill, just the number in the Chair #2 line. -- Cheers, Bev ================================================== =================== A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is it such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet? |

Try threading your way through 5-6 groups of 20-25 hot skiing 6&7 year olds. They behave like a swarm of bees, right in the middle of where-ever. Amusing enough, the Squaw kid coaches all brought their swarms to Alpine for the "variety" yesterday & Thurs. They were gone today, which was good - just our own Alpine kids; didn't have to worry so much about clobbering a kid, just about being clobbered by jerk intermediates. |
