Summer glacier skiing?
I just (late August) came back from Norway where I was near, but did not go
to where I could ski on a glacier. I didn't have much time and assumed it would be lousy skiing (ice in the morning slush by midday). Has anyone skied on a glacier in the summer there or Whistler Blackcomb or else where? How was it? |

I've skied in July in France. Just as you described. Small appliances in the morning (0700) and shin deep slush by 1100. Fun though. Worth it for the novelty. Wouldn't consider it for more than that though. |

I've skied on St. Mary's Glacier here in Colorado several times. Usually in July and August. I've also skied some of the snowfields around here in Summit and Park Counties. St. Mary's stays pretty hard all day since it rarely gets hit by the sun. It's mainly sun cups so it's not great for skiing. The best thing to do is take some gates and a few friends. If you keep skiing the same line it shaves off the sun cups and you can do some pretty good slalom skiing after a few runs. snoig |

Summer glacier skiing?
I've skied Tuckerman's (NH) the first week of June and Mt. Hood (OR) the
first of August. Both were fine, but no chairlifts. |

I was Skiing at Hintertux at the begining of June, We where supposed to be race training but as the powder was above our knees we decided gates where too dangerous so we had to go ski the powder instead also we got to ski all day instead of just the mornings as we expected. mind you I have also been to Tignes in October a few years ago when the weather was so vile they closed the mountain for two days, and when it was open the snow was moving sideways across the piste -- Chris *:-) Downhill Good, Uphill BAD! www.suffolkvikings.org.uk |

Of course, the best skiing is in Chile or New Zealand, but if you don't want
to travel that far in August, Mt Hood in Oregon has a great snowfield to ski on (no it's not a glacier, but then, it's not moving either). Spend the nite at Timberline Lodge, which is a relic from the past in itself. http://www.timberlinelodge.com/ "DZN" wrote in message news I just (late August) came back from Norway where I was near, but did not go to where I could ski on a glacier. Have done Timberline in Oregon. On one particularly warm day in the beginning of August. The snow started out soft at 7AM and stayed in good firm enough condition until noon. Very pleasant day. I think going later in the summer helps. When snow becomes corn it has less tendency to become real mushy and sticky. The warm day meant we didn't have the morning ice issue. |
