Ankle injury
Now that boarding season is about to start, I've managed to re-injure my
bad ankle (the left). To me, it seems that more stress is put on the lead foot. I'm just wondering if I could expect any relief by switching to a goofy stance and leading with my good ankle. Also, any good brace/wrapping techniques would be appreciated. Maybe a really stiff boot? |

Maybe a really stiff boot? I don't think riding switch is a great idea to protect an ankle. Stiffer boots will definitely help. Some people ride hardboots to protect their bum ankles but perhaps that's overkill. Still it's November, at least a 4-6 weeks before any major snowboarding... rehab rehab rehab! |

I severely sprained my left (lead) ankle 2.5 years ago while snowboarding. Good thing I was in my hard boots instead of soft or it probably would have been even worse! You didn't mention the type of injury. But please understand that ankles are used quite a bit in snowboarding - perhaps more than you think - this became readily apparent when I tried to go back out about 9 weeks after the sprain. I could ride but not well. Without knowing what type of injuty you've got, I would recommend extreme caution before snowboarding on it, regular or goofy. Learning to go the other way is not going to be easy on an injured ankle. Also, any good brace/wrapping techniques would be appreciated. Maybe a really stiff boot? You won't be able to wrap it with anything thick. Gauze tape of any of the sports ankle supports of similar thin-ness are your best bet. Have you seen your doc yet? If not, please do before you snowboard. Yes, I've snowboarded through injuries against my doc's advice a few times but at least I knew exactly what risks I was taking. You should too.
