About what year was that? Oh, and in my book, it isn't an OFFICIAL opening day if you don't STAY open until the end of the season. If Berthoud closed a few days after cuz the snow melted, then it was a STUNT, not an opening day. Sam "Thems is my rulz" Seiber It was 1961. There was a major blizzard that Labor Day weekend. The leaves were still on the trees in Denver, and it brought the entire city to a virtual stand still as limbs fell, disrupting power and making streets impassable. I don't know if Berthound stayed open afterward or not. C. |

Actually, it went like this.
Ralston (the Purina Dog Chow folks) owned Keystone and A-Basin. They also bought Breckenridge from Victoria Corp (a Japanese sporting goods company) who bought it from Aspen. When Ralston wanted to get back to it's main business (animal chow) they wanted to sell their resort holdings and Vail wanted to buy but then there could be monoply problems so they were forced to divest A-Basin after the sale. There was a marketing agreement between them for a set number of years to allow the use of Breck/Keystone passes at A-Basin. I think it was for ten years but I'm not sure. Right now, Vail Resorts is trying to ween A-Basin from it's corperate infrastructure. Things like phones, computer networks, marketing etc. I wouldn't be supprised to see A-Basin on it's own within the next few years and passes only good at Keystone and Breck. snoig |

The Labor Day opening at Berthoud was in the early to mid 1960's. I remember it because the Rocky Mountain News featured a front page picture of my then boss enjoying the snow. Since we ran a ski shop in Denver it was an excellent free ad. Did Berthoud remain open for the season? I have no idea, I just remember the day. Do I lose points if it was a stunt? Ask the Colorado Skier to check the archives. It isn't so much points you loose. You are not the ski area. From time to time someplace gets a bunch of snow in September, open their ski area, and claim dibs on being first to open. My rule is they have to stay open for that date to count. If you went skiing Labor day at Berthoud, you get BONUS points for getting out so early. I know sometime in the 80's Berthoud opened very early October. I ran into the reporter doing the writeup for the Rocky Mtn News, and got my name and a few of my quotes in the paper (ie. "any skiing is infinately better than no skiing at all"). If I recall that date, just the east side was open, and it would have taken less time just to walk up to the top than wait in line for the T-bar. All I know is all this record breaking heat in Denver is making my wait for my Beloved Loveland seem a bit longer. But swapping these old ski tales helps a bit. Didn't start skiing 'till I was 22 years old. The story above does trigger a memory of how about 30 years later the same thing happened to Denver, and a Mayor lost his job to Fred Pena cuz Denver streets were impassable.
